Richard Nixon's Watergate Scandal

The Watergate scandal is the name given to President Richard Nixon’s planned break-in of the Democratic National Headquarters and its attempted cover-up (Free Dictionary. 2014). The Watergate scandal hurt the President’s image and caused the American people to distrust the government. Although Nixon accomplished a lot of good during his presidency, it is out shadowed by the Watergate break-in and cover-up.

Richard Nixon was the 37th U.S President from January 20, 1969 through August 9, 1974 and during his term, President Nixon would become one of the most talked about administration. This was due to the Watergate scandal; this would heavily over shadow his other accomplishments and bring the White House under the microscope. Nixon would tap phones and record conversations of people when he would have meetings. He did end the war in Vietnam and improved our relationships with China and the USSR. One of his objections in the United States was to try and bridge the divide in our cities and try to heal the war weary people of our nation, because of all the disagreements over Vietnam.

Nixon’s presidency is considered very controversial and people have widely different opinions about whether or not he was a good president. During his regime he established many important policies and political reforms, some of which still affect the U.S. today. However, at some point the seriousness and amount of his mistakes outweighed his accomplishments, leading him to be the first and so far only president to resign from office. After years and with the information that has been made available for public today, become all Nixon’s hidden and less hidden fails as clear as the countryside sky.

Which at first glance looks like a positive thing but once you dive deeper into what his real motives are, it's rather eye opening. Let's start with the war on crime. During this time you had the black panthers who were people fighting for civil rights, people who were fighting for women's rights, and people who were fighting for gay rights. Nixon felt the need to fight against these movements and therefore one was more likely to get arrested for attending these rallies— for committing a crime which really wasn't a crime. He strategically blinded the public to this by calling it "the war on crime".

Richard Nixon was the 37th president of the United States and currently the only president to have resigned from office. From 1969 to 1974 Nixon held office after a new wave of conservatism due to the College students marches that consequently turned into riots over anti-war Vietnam sentiment. Furthermore the Democratic Party split due to polarization over the involvement of the United States in the war.

The feeling of wariness for those in politics was not always existent; although only three presidents have faced impeachment charger, only one president has left office. Richard Nixon was the thirty seventh president of the United States, a man in the public eye for many years as both a U.S. representative and Senator (“Richard”), well educated and around sixty when he resigned from the position as president. On the evening of August 8, 1974, Nixon delivered his resignation speech over a public broadcast from his Oval Office to the people of the United States. The former president gave this speech to inform the nation of the upcoming changing president; he also voiced his hopes for the country in future affairs, especially the foreign policies

On June 17, 1972 there were five burglars arrested inside of the Office of the Democratic National Committee, which is located in the watergate building in Washington D.C. The robbers were caught trying to wiretap phones and steal secret documents. It turns out that the robbers are connected to Nixon’s reelection campaign. They weren’t sure if Nixon was connected to the burglary, but he attempted to cover it up. For example, he raised “hush money” for the burglars, he destroyed evidence, fired uncooperative staff members. He even tried to get the FBI to stop the investigation of the crime. Some of Nixon’s aides testified before a grand jury about the president’s crimes. They also testified that Nixon had secretly taped every conversation that took place in the Oval Office. All the prosecutors needed was to get their hands on those tapes. That would prove that Nixon was guilty. The court indicted seven of Nixon’s closest aides and also issued Nixon a subpoena. Nixon said he was immune from the subpoena, claiming “executive privilege” which means he has the right to withhold information from other government branches. He eventually had to turn over the tapes and three days later he ended up resigning from the presidency.

The 1960’s election was very controversial. People were split between John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon. The best candidate for president would be Richard M. Nixon. There are multiple reasons that show him as a better president. Richard M. Nixon kept all of his campagain focused on his policies rather than on try to take down John F. Kennedy. He also was very sure on what he was going to do about the Cold War, he wanted to make sure that America was safe from any threats regarding other countries. Also Vice President Richard M. Nixon had more experience with a President position.

Foreign policy wise, Nixon, while still in office, began to follow Realpolitik, a policy that allowed him to create relationships with both the Soviet Union and China because it no longer required morality to be a considering factor. This change in foreign policy caused concern for Americans because of the fear of communism.

Article 3 of the Constitution grants the Supreme Court the power to review cases and declare a verdict. However, the Supreme Court is only allowed to make a decision regarding a case if and only it is brought to them. In other words, only cases that has been passed through the lower courts and has made its way up into the Supreme Court is the Supreme Court allowed to make a decision. From the founding of the constitution, many cases have made its way up the courts and into the Supreme Court where the Justices deliver the final verdict. Cases similar to that of Nixon vs. United States challenged the federal power of the President.

President Nixon helped our environment threefold during his presidency. Unfortunately, the majority of U.S. citizens either do not notice or do not care about these changes. Even though Richard Nixon was held responsible for the Watergate Scandal ,he did many things that have a big impact on the environment today. Before he resigned from office, Richard Nixon enacted the Clean Air Act of 1970 and founded the Environmental Protection Agency. Richard Nixon did many other great deeds that benefit the environment that we live in today.

A. Plan of Investigation This investigation will assess the effectiveness of Nixon 's Vietnamization Policy of the Vietnam war to end U.S. involvement. The scope of my research will assess the effectiveness of Nixon’s Vietnamization Policy to end the U.S. involvement during the Vietnam war, as well as the involvement of the women in the military, Nixon’s Doctrine, and the new economic policy that caused the end of the U.S. involvement of the Vietnam war between 1945-1975. The methods to be used in this investigation will be primary and secondary sources historical textbook in search of Nixon, 1972. This investigation will evaluate the effectiveness of the new economic policy In Search of Nixon: A Psychohistorical Inquiry.

He was elected president and was living a good life. Nixon’s desire to maintain the power and gain the liking of citizens led him to making a decision without court approval when he was criticized for moving too slowly in disengaging from a war. He ordered for the phones of several government officials and reporters to be tapped. Voters began to distrust Nixon and, as a result, he became the only president to resign from office. Richard Nixon was very much like Macbeth in that his excess ambition and desire for power led to bad choices being made.
