Satchel Paige's Professional Career

postage stamp. Jackie had a lot of courage to go into the major leagues as a black man. He got bullied and made fun of, he was treated badly because he was black. Jackie made it so that any black player that is good enough can be in the major leagues. Some Examples of good black players: Mookie Betts, Addison Russell, Carl Edwards Jr., Jason Heyward, Austin Jackson, George Springer, Lorenzo Cain, Giancarlo Stanton, Dee Gordon, Khris Davis, Howie Kendrick, Andrew Mccutchen, Josh Bell, Josh Harrison, Dexter Fowler, etc.

Jackie was named the best player in the negro leagues, and now is thought as one of the best players to play the game. Going through all of the horrible things that he did, Jackie's mental strength could almost tackle anything that came across his path. Jackie had setbacks through his baseball career, and they all made an impact. A setback that Jackie had was him being an african american male.

Throughout Jackie’s life he had many battles and struggles but still remained strong. Jackie was the first African American to play in the Professional MLB. Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia, on January 31, 1919. Ms. Mallie and Mr. Jerry are the parents of Jackie Robinson.

Born into a society of racial discrimination, Jack Roosevelt Robinson, known as Jackie Robinson, became an inspiring African American who stood up to racial hate and became the first black man to play major league baseball outside of a segregated black league (Biography.com). Robinson was born into a sharecropping family in Cairo, Georgia on January 31, 1919 (umass.edu). At 6 months of age, his father, Jerry Robinson, left the family in 1920. After this happening, his mother, Mallie Robinson, decided to move the family to a white neighborhood in Pasadena, California.” Manfred Weidhorn noted in his biography, Jackie Robinson,“Jackie was proud of his mother, who would not allow the white neighbors to drive her away or frighten her or mistreat her kids.

Did you know of a great baseball player, that was also, a wonderful man that helped african-americans fight racial violence? During his years of playing baseball, Hank Aaron received many death threats on his way to break Babe Ruth’s homerun record. Also, the many people he impacted and helped them get away from racial violence. From helping these people Hank received many awards. Hank Aaron, a great baseball player, but more importantly a great civil rights activist, that helped many african-americans get away from racial violence.

To do that, he had to find someone that could withstand racial discrimination and learn to not fight back when dealt with harsh criticism. Jackie Robinson took an amazing risk when he became the first African-American athlete to play in the major leagues. Robinson has been a huge inspiration to athletes, paving the way for blacks, not just in the game of baseball, as well as being an outspoken activist for the rights of American-Americans. Baseball was segregated at the time, but Jackie took an unbelievable risk, breaking the color barrier in the sport.

He was a big part in the fight for equal rights. Jackie Robinson took so much abuse on the field because of his race that it gave him mental breakdowns. These breakdowns sometimes took days to recover from but he went through all of that so other people would have better opportunities. But this didn’t just go on for one season, Robinson had to deal with that racism for about two years before he was really accepted as a “respected” baseball player. (Kuhn,web) and (Wilson,web).

He wanted to show the baseball and athletics world that African Americans can play sports just as good as the White people. His grandmother was a slave when she was young. He felt it was needed to have a black athlete who could stand up for others and be a positive role

An icon is a person or thing regarded as a representative symbol of something. This man was not only an Icon in baseball, but a civil rights leader, a father of three, and a role model for all young adults. Jackie Robinson was a small town boy who had big-time dreams. He was from a small city in Georgia and always had outstanding athletic abilities. Not only was Jackie a baseball player, but he also played a major role in breaking the color barrier.

As Jackie Robinson once said “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives”. There is no doubt that Jackie Robinson has been one of most impactful baseball players to ever play the sport. For reasons such as pushing himself to reach his goals, facing many hardships, and being the first African American to play in the MLB, he has shown perseverance and been a role model to everyone. The first reason how Jackie Robinson has impacted society is how he worked hard to reach his goals.

For being the first African American to play in the majors, he got his number retired throughout baseball. Another well know African American baseball player was Satchel Paige. He was 2nd to play in the American League. He became the first African American to pitch in the World Series and in the All-Star game.

Jackie Robinson challenged white America’s societal perception of African American at the time. “Robinson won Rookie of the Year in 1947. In later seasons, more African-Americans joined other teams in the Major Leagues, as Robinson continued to excel. His success gained him fans from all over the country.” (Mcbirney 14).

The reason for having the Negro Leagues was because it very unlikely to have a colored person be on the same field as a white person. However, one man who stands alone Jackie Robinson’s defeat to break the color barrier in baseball with the help of Branch

Jackie Robinson fought to end segregation, and the rights for all people through many different ways. The most recognized and probably the biggest thing he did was transform all sports through being the first African American to play professional baseball. This did not only stop discrimination in baseball but this helped stop discrimination in all sports together. After his impact on baseball he wasn't done there, he join the National Association for the advancement of colored people. He became the chairman for the freedom fund and later raised over a million dollars.

Jackie Robinson not only made impacts on the field that were monumental, but he made impacts off the field that were equally as important. Jackie helped presidents get elected, get kids off the streets and into the most prestigious schools there is, and most importantly he broke the black color barrier in baseball. Jackie Robinson is one of the most influential people to ever live, he did things that people would dream about, he stood up for what he believed. To begin, Jackie’s biggest accomplishment was breaking the black color barrier on baseball, “ Jackie Robinson broke through the color barrier that kept blacks out of the Major League Baseball [MLB].
