In the context of Malaysia primary ESL classroom, storytelling has been widely conducted in different approaches. National Storytelling Network (n.d.) defined storytelling as ‘the interactive art of using words and actions to reveal the elements and images of a story while encouraging the listener’s imagination.’ National Council of Teachers of English interpreted storytelling as, “relating a tale to one or more listeners through voice and gesture (as cited in Miller & Pennycuff, 2008) As a deduction, it could be seen that storytelling is an activity that relate a tale using words and actions with one or more listeners in order to reveal the elements of a story through encouraging listener’s imagination. Collins (1999) advocated that stories provide a conceptual framework for thinking, which allows children to shape experiences into a whole that can understand by mentally mapping the experiences and seeing pictures in their heads. (as cited in Isbell, Sobol, Lindauer, & Lowrance, 2004) By developing learners’ language skills, creativity and critical thinking skills as well as respect on self and others, the idea of promoting holistic development will be realised in an effective way. The storytelling session of this coursework is a priceless experience to me and it has provided me an endeavour of telling story to primary school pupils and observing the immediate reaction and effect of the activity. Through this experience, I have learnt that storytelling is essential for children as their ability to learn depends upon the mental capacity to compare other 's experiences.
