For over fifteen years I have enjoyed being an LPN. Working in nursing homes taught me to how to patience and how to use my knowledge to help my patients to the best of my ability. My time as an alcohol and drug rehabilitation nurse helped me to appreciate the courage it takes to admit to a problem, ask for help and the strength it takes to work to get better. Working in a hospital taught me to how to work in a fast paced setting while keeping my sanity intact.
Thank you for taking the time to review my personal statement on why I have chosen to embark on the journey to become a Physician Assistant. My story started several years ago, more than I care to count, when I stumbled into the health care world as a paramedic in rural Pennsylvanian. While in high school, I became friends with several other students who were actively volunteering with a local fire department. After hearing their stories about the things they were learning and doing I also joined a volunteer fire department, mostly out of curiosity. I am in the Medical Billing and Coding Program. For the past year or so I have been very indecisive on what I wanted to go back to school for. I started off going to school for sports medicine and decided it was just not for me. Every time I would push myself to apply for school I would always back out. My aunt is a coder at the local hospital here.
My Intent to Be a Nurse Practitioner Coming from a third world country where there aren’t many opportunities for work and funding for education, proceding to nursing school was a grand opportunity. The privilege to attend a government subsidized school where top students in the region compete to get into the program that allowed only 60 students per year was indeed a blessing. As clinical rotations began, what was once considered a mere opportunity evolved into a true passion for caring as I truly love and enjoy nursing and helping people.
I have decided to become a nurse practitioner to help aid those who are in need and be helpful to people who can only speak Spanish. Communication is key when it comes to health, therefore if I am able to personally understand a patient’s need it will lead to a higher satisfaction among Spanish-speaking patients. I have always found the health field interesting and fascinating, so I strongly feel becoming a nurse practitioner is the best for me. Volunteering at a health clinic made me experience what it is like to work with patients and confirmed it is what I want to do as a career. I have chosen public health as my major because it is a dynamic field. I have a passion for making a difference in people’s lives and helping others achieve their goals. It is with great passion that I am dedicated and willing to contribute my service or skills to help someone in need. My philosophy of health education is very simple, to prevent, improve and educate the lives of individuals, families, communities, populations, and societies. Besides, there is no safer way to touch people’s lives than through public health.
Ever since grade school, I was passionate about working in the field of medicine, and science. I enjoyed anatomy, medical spelling and terminology, and reading about the healthcare industry. Because of my passion for healthcare, I decided to to attend Health Sciences High. There, I was given the best opportunities, such as, medical internships and college health courses. My plans and goals had turned me into a mature young adult.
I am interested in Howard University because it is an HBCU that encompass the themes of cultural diversity and education. Ive been late twice to my clinical 's and it has been more than 15 minutes which is considered an absent. Two absences automatically reduces 10% of my grade. I understand that i can 't continue to do this specially once I 'm a professional. I can really put my team behind and being short staff can lead to falls or injuries to a patient.
