Do school bags affect the posture of students and the weight to cause damage? Research has it that schoolbags can be traced back to the 1930’s where students carried leather straps which held all of their books together, which they would’ve lugged over their shoulders (Leibowitz, 2013). In the 1980’s we started to see double strapped school bags which students would carry their bags over both of their shoulders. Whilst scrolling through images one would see how much bigger bags have gotten much bigger since with carrying heavy textbooks, notebooks, more stationary, calculators etc. A survey group of 1,505 pupils/students (about 2%) was picked up in random fashion from the ranks of 28 randomly selected schools. Back pain is taken very seriously amongst younger children, as there is always the possibility of a critical condition, such as a spinal tumor, growth, and may even be an infection of the spine. (Julian, 2002). Many other factors could contribute to the pain a teenager would experience such as a deviation of the spinal coloumn from the midline when viewed from the back. Two types occur depending on the cause of scoliosis, which include either structural or functional. (Coetsee, 2008) 1. Structural scoliosis: structural scoliosis is known by permanent structural changes in the bone. Usually this is congenital, which means that the person is born with it. 2. Functional scoliosis: functional scoliosis results from physical dysfunction as a result from bad posture, straining of the back and/or muscular imbalances.
