When I was young I always give homeless people extra money, my family always told me if you are lazy you will become homeless. But sometime some homeless just have bad luck, maybe they went through a trauma or a business failed. In some case yes that person is just lazy, with that being said I think every homeless person have a different story and we shouldn 't judge them for it. In today world, I kind of avoid homeless people not because I think I am better than them. It 's just as I get older, I know more things and heard a lot of story about homeless people. Some of them are being fake, or some use the money you donate to buy drugs. So you don’t know who you should trust .
I 'm actually torn on this issue. The current price tag to support the homeless, or possibly even the underemployed, is enormous, and what we 've been doing clearly isn 't working. Changes to how we live, and technology have rendered many jobs obsolete, or soon to be obsolete so can 't expect people to work in unskilled jobs when those jobs don 't exist anymore. There will always be people who cannot support themselves due to mental or physical challenges, and society should ensure that they are provided for. There will also always be those who, due to an event or situation, find themselves without a home or means to provide for themselves; these people need assistance for a relatively short period of time.
This is one of those problems that instead of finding solutions for, most people are “sweeping this problem under the rug” and finding “quick fixes”. The homeless population will continue to be victimized unless we change our attitude towards homeless people. We need to view them as fellow human beings who deserve a place in society. I think you made a great point by saying that “understanding the reasons behind them being homeless” because, in my opinion, that is one the biggest problems. We do not care enough or understand their situation; it is a lot simpler to blame poverty and homelessness on poor people.
There’s reasoning behind that bold statement too. The reason why it’s not ideal to hand homeless people money is because you never know what that person is going to spend it on. They might have a sign saying that they are hungry and need money for food, clothing, or some other necessity but just because they say that on their sign doesn’t mean that’s what they actually want the money for. They possibly will spend the hard earned money on alcohol, or drugs. Those are two thing majority of people don’t want their hard earned money to go to.
Did you know most homeless people don’t become homeless because of a drinking problem? Most homeless people go homeless because social and economic factors intervene! A Lot of the homeless live in poverty. They don’t make a lot of money. Only about 25 to 50 dollars a day.
When i'm walking around and see a homeless person I try to give them what little change I have on me, even if that means I won’t
Some homeless individuals are so mentally ill that pedestrians assume this person must be on drugs. Yes, some do drugs, but most homeless individuals who use drugs started using them after they have lost their home. For most, drugs were not the leading cause of their loss of housing but can potentially give them trouble finding a spot within a homeless shelter since “Many shelters will not admit anyone who is drunk or high. Those who do not have shelter or enough income come join us here daily to eat or take a nap”(Gretchen, St. John’s Kitchen). Many of them suffer from mental illnesses, “25.6% were diagnosed with anger management problems, 19.1% with ADHD, 15.2% with hyperactivity, 4.5% with dyslexia”(Toronto Star Newspaper).
A constant cause of homelessness is alcohol and drug abuse, a study done in 1989 revealed that 33-38 percent of homeless are alcoholic and 13-15 percent are drug abusers with those percentages rising throughout the years (Parsell.) There is a distinction between enabling and helping. When one helps another, they are doing something which the other individual can not do on their own, where as enabling one is to do something for the individual which they can do on their own. So instead of aiding the homeless feed some of the addictions by giving the money that they can use to buy their addiction and that lead them to the situation they find themselves in, upper class Americans should manage their money for the welfare of the lower class, just as parents disburse their money for the benefit of the children without actually allowing the kids get their hands on the
Homelessness is one the most ignored problems in the United States with citizen and politician. Homeless people are walked by and ignored. Nobody ever thinks that they will be homeless. Due to the economy, people live paycheck to paycheck making house payments very difficult. Most people will want to believe most homeless people are drug addicts or alcoholics, but most people will be surprise to know that it is no all true.
In all fairness, I had those same ideas too. Many people have driven or walked past a group of homeless people and ignored them or gone out of their way to not make contact. It’s just part of our culture. Homeless people are shunned and looked down upon. Over time, the word homeless has taken on a very negative connotation, and those labels such as, criminal, lazy and addict have taken over our perception of who homeless people are.
More people suffer from homelessness than we realize. We often take for granted having a home to go to. I completely agree with Anna about her feelings on homelessness. I often see the homeless on the side of the road and I normally refer to them as homeless people but what I fail to realize is, that “homeless person” has a name, that “homeless guy” is a human being just like the rest of us longing for certainty, stability and privacy. Those “homeless people” are human beings without a home.
People that are homeless or become homeless today, experience so much they are not sure what to do because they think they do not have help from anyone or somewhere to sleep. Adults are not the only people that become homeless, teenagers become homeless as well because before they turn 18 some will run away from home at least one time. While these people are sitting on the street, they experience numerous things such as abuse from other people, drugs, unemployment or not able to find a job, etc. Everyday when people drive or walk by someone thats is homeless, glancing at their sign reading what it says to make them feel sad for them. However, by doing something small for them makes an impact in someone else’s eyes.
last time I saw a homeless man asking me for money, and I would ask myself weather to give him money, but then I would not know what he would use it for, maybe he would spend it on alcohol, cigar, or even drugs. so instead of giving him money, I bought him food and water. Yes, there are homeless people that take your money and go back to alcoholism and drugs, and it makes no improvement to our society, especially
The topics of homelessness and panhandling came up when we had a guest speaker who was a social worker come into class. Everyone in class admitted they ignore those people who ask for money, but the speaker encouraged us to acknowledge them next time this happens. He said that acknowledgement may be the only thing keeping them going on in life. It is a good life skill, especially when working in the field of criminal justice. In the criminal justice field, we as people need that social interaction with someone and as a person in a field that comes in contact with so many
It is a large complex ongoing societal problem throughout communities that no one can stop. All societies have homeless people and, on the contrary, all have rich people; It is just how a society works. In my eyes, the richer of society are much more appreciated than the homeless. Because the people with money can afford to pay for housing, living, and nice things, society favors them and pushes aside the homeless. I do believe that if society took more notice of homeless people the situation could change.
Some people wonder why homeless people have no jobs, cars, or homes. Here are a few reasons why homeless people are homeless. As we see in every Country, City, and State there are homeless people everywhere.
