Introduction: Diversity is defined as any mixture of components characterized by similarities and differences. The components of a diversity mixture including similarities and differences between ages, races, educational levels, gender, geographical origins, religious affiliations and working styles. Studies show that firms should understand how they value diversity and use it to establish a competitive advantage over their competitors, it will reduce the profitability, turnover rate and market value of the company. In today’s unpredictable hospitality market, diversity workforce become prevalent, which not only cause the difficulties, but also the opportunities for hospitality industry. For example, The Civil Rights Act of 1964 makes discriminate against sex, religion, colour and ethnic background become illegal. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission shows that there are several companies who want to hire the most qualified employees available, and the diversity of qualified candidates from the local area will help to create a diverse workforce. Globalization: Globalization makes transportation becomes more efficient and different channels of communication connected different parts of the world. The ways in which diversity can impact on work and work relationships: Cultural diversity can affect the workplace in numerous ways. Negative impacts can include miscommunication, creation of barriers, and dysfunctional adaptation behaviors. Positive impacts can include building a sound knowledge base fellow colleagues, which can make for smoother integration of the organization into foreign cultures. Many organizations have recognized that the workforce is changing and they are working to create a work environment in which diversity and difference are valued and in which employees can work to their fullest. They are dealing with the problems that arise when people in the workplace communicate.
Diversity has been recognised as a valuable initiative in the advancement of a workplace, however recent studies in England and Wales show that the judiciary remains largely imbalanced . For decades diversity has been a central matter within the legal sphere but according to a recent report by the Council of Europe published at the end of 2014, women only make up 25% of judges in England and Wales and to this day, Lady Hale remains the only representative for women in the Supreme Court . Furthermore, diversity statistics in 2015 concluded that the percentage of BME judges remains unchanged at 7%. The organization I work for, Starbucks is highly diversified. In my opinion, Starbucks successfully employs each of the seven diversity components: “authentic leadership commitment, clear organizational communication, inclusive recruitment practices, long-term retention strategies, incorporating diversity into main work of the organization, diversity management metrics, and expansive external relationships” (CanÌas, Sondak 2014). With that being said, Starbucks could improve by incorporating diversity into main work of the organization. One way Starbucks proves their commitment to diversity is authentic by holding a diverse board of directors. Of the seven board members, three are women and one of these women is of an African descent.
An example of a diverse society is Singapore. The definition of a diverse society is to have different types of people, who do not share the same race, culture, ethnicity, beliefs, practices, race, tradition, et cetera, to ‘come together’ and form a community. Living in a diverse society has its advantages.
