Animal Ethics- Pro Animal Research There is a large number of people who would disagree with the statement that “Animal testing is very beneficial” but what these people don’t realize is that without animal testing we wouldn’t have all the medical advancements that we have today. Animal testing has made a huge impact on our daily lives and will affect our future to come. According to Alec Baldwin, “One cannot be ‘single issue’ when it comes to medical research.” Baldwin’s mother is apart of the Breast Cancer Research Fund, she stated that “This year, approximately 182,800 women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, and approximately 40,800 women will die from breast cancer.”
Researchers estimated over 26 million animals were used for scientific tests and commercial testing subject every year in the United States. Over the years animals were used to be tested on medical treatments, products for human uses, health care, and etc. The practice of researching on living animals has started since 500 BC. Opponents of this act say that it is cruel to experiment on animals, there are other methods available to replace the cruel act of experimenting on living animals, and that the human bodies and animal’s bodies are totally two different features and the research often yields irrelevant results. The federal Animal Welfare or AWA passed the animal testing act in 1966 and amended in 1970, 1976, and 1985.
I’m here today to talk about a controversial issue that has been around for a period of time, animal testing. Animal testing using animals in experiments with different chemical substances in everything from medical to cosmetic to determine their safety as well as effectiveness . It’s a problem that has existed since the 3rd and 4th centuries BCE with its merciless methods and painful ways of abusing animals for human demands, but now it’s time for it to stop. Our technology has developed significantly since; therefore, such medieval methods of torturing animals are no longer necessary. Researches have shown that each year, over 100 million animals are tortured and killed in American laboratories alone, including dogs, cats and more; this shows how far out of hand animal testing have gotten.
Henceforth, as animal testing increased, so did the controversy surrounding it (“Animal testing,” n.d.). Moreover, with the help of animal testing, various treatments and medicines are developed for unconventional diseases. Although animal testing may seem ruthless, animals are used for experimental research that contributes to science if there are no other possible substitutes. An animals life are not for our personal use of experimenting and torturing species in order for us to advance in science. There is little to no laws or regulation to conducting animal testing and the number of testing an it is unfortunately rising in other countries instead of declining. The United States is one of the top 10 countries that conduct experiments on animals (“Cruelty to Animals in Laboratories”). Even though many state that animal testing is the only way t safely trial medical experiments, over the years new alternatives and examination has been done that can bring an end to animal testing all together.

Lab rats are injected and monitored closely for however long they survive in order to calculate the effects of the product. When it comes to the topic of cosmetic animal testing (Cosmetic animal testing- taking cosmetic products finished or unfinished and using them on animals in many different ways to test for different affects), most people will acknowledge that it is inhumane and unsafe for the sake of animals. When this agreement ends, it is on the question of why we need animals in research. Whereas some are convinced that it’s not harmful to any animal during the process, others maintain that it’s still the most known cosmetic testing today. The Humane Society acknowledges that testing on animals is a well known form of cosmetic testing.
