My Family: A Personal Narrative Of My Life

I was born in Charlotte on June, 11, 1996. My parents came to the U.S. in 1995, as my dad’s job had brought him to North Carolina. My brother was born a couple years later in Charlotte as well. For the first three years of my life, our family bounced around from North Carolina to Florida to Pennsylvania, before finally settling down in Poughkeepsie, a small town in the Hudson Valley region of New York. My dad worked for IBM as a computer engineer, and my mom stayed home to take care of my brother and me. I started elementary school at Hagan Elementary School in the district of Spackenkill. From third to fifth grade, I participated in a program called Odyssey of the Mind, where we developed creative problem solving skills. Odyssey of the Mind was probably my favorite experience of elementary school, because it was a space where I could be weird and free with people just as weird as me. I also made friends during this time period with whom I am still close with. At the end of fifth grade, my parents had to make the difficult decision of moving our family back to India, as both of my grandmothers had started experiencing deteriorations in their health. I didn’t quite like my roommate at first, since we came from very different backgrounds. Looking back, I was definitely too quick to judge. While she came from a more privileged lifestyle and sometimes didn’t understand why I didn’t have the same perceptions on certain issues as she did, she was a perfectly fine roommate. During the second semester, I met some of my best friends, with whom I am living with now. I also tried to become more outgoing, and joined Tufts Film Series.
