Moving to America took a huge toll on my family. My mom had to leave her husband behind, and move to a whole new country to raise her two children as a single mother. She had to leave her job, her friends, and her family to once again become a full-time college student. This change had an immense effect on my life. Over the last four years, I have had the extra responsibilities of taking care of my younger brother while my mom spent endless nights studying to be on top of her classes and keep her full scholarship at Broward College.
What makes someone an American? This is a question that has so many answers because so many people have different views on Americanism. One person might claim you have to be born in America, some might say you have to be raised in it. While they are not necessarily wrong, others will have a different idea. Some people view Americanism as an attitude, not a nationality.
They are spending the money that they do not have on unnecessary products. “I was letting brand names control my life and I needed help.” (Cleveland, 280) “In my mind, clothes made the woman and everything else was secondary.” (Cleveland, 279)

Moving to a new country can be difficult sometimes. Leaving all my relatives and friends back home was the saddest thing for me. My mother told me that we were moving to a new country. At first, I thought my mother was joking about it. but little did I know that she was telling the truth.
Fashion, or rather the fashion industry, is ageist, sexist, racist, fattist and fascist, but only in so far as today’s society is. This industry is merely an extension of capitalism, and as such its only concern is generating as much profit as possible. Trying to include and represent all different types of people is very low on its priority list, so it continues to perpetuate harmful societal patterns, be it on purpose or not. The most blatant case of sexism in fashion is that women in this industry are by and large models, while the more powerful and influential positions of designers, managers and directors are usually taken by men.

Today, our society is filled with various cultures, beliefs, and lifestyles. Despite differences, everyone wants to be accepted by others in their community, but what has to be done in order to be accepted is not clearly defined. Being accepted could mean wearing the right clothes, being involved in the right clubs or groups, or simply being a kind or generous individual. People should just be normal. As stated in the book Remix, “the label ‘normal’ is loaded with a range of cultural assumptions”
Fashion is more common in current society than in the ancient tribes or peasant communities. Modern society is an open one where class differences are not as severe as in primitive society. Its urban and mobile class structure allows people to develop its own personality taste and implement its new course. The modern world is more open-minded to differences and consequently places few restraints on the cycle of fashion. Our principles of judgment have also changed.
As per the 2011 analysis, approximately 54% of the population lives in poverty. The country also exhibits one of the most unequal income distributions. As a matter of fact, 10% of the total population consumes about 47% of the total income of the country (Adams & Hawkins, 2007). This is nearly half of the income being consumed by a tenth of Guatemalans. The indigenous population which is approximately a half of the total national population lives in the rural areas.
In spite of being originated in the 17th century Baroque fashion has made a very strong comeback in the fashion realm. The Baroque period was all about exuberance drama and grandeur According to Cogsworth, ‘If it 's not Baroque, don 't fix it!’ (The Beauty and the Beast, 1991). The fashion industry seems to be inspired by the baroque fashion and this can be clearly seen in either the silhouettes of the garments or the bold and glorious prints. Fall/winter runway collection 2012of designers like Dolce and Gabbana and Balmain are a celebration of Italian spirituality and grandeur (Davidson, 2012).
Heraclitus once stated “the only thing that is constant, is change.” , nothing exemplifies fashion more than this statement. As a person that is constantly demanding herself to grow and change, fashion is the one thing that can keep up with me. It is the only constant in my life that I have a stable relationship with, due to its shape shifting nature which resembles mine. A part of change for me was always aspiring to be bigger, better, and bolder; I apply all of those concepts when it comes to fashion and design.
Fashion is my method of self-expression. The clothes we choose to wear gives us control over how others perceive us and affects how we feel about ourselves. From wearing black at the Golden Globes in support of the Time’s Up movement to the traditional Chinese Qi Pao, clothes can show solidarity without words or act as a way for us to connect to our cultural heritage. This is why fashion is important to me, because it allows me to tell a story about who I am and who I aspire to be. I have chosen to further my Management studies at the London College of Fashion because the MA Fashion Design Management covers themes essential for managing a successful fashion brand, which has always been a dream of mine.
