Education plays an important role in the world. It is fundamental to the development and growth of countries. Some of the advantages of education are the reduction of poverty, increase of income, better health in educated individuals, boosts in the economic growth and the promotion of gender equality. According to Kim (2011), the effect of the advantages is directly proportional to the quality of education provided. The quality of education is continually being raised to meet global standards and boost the advantages.

One of the ways in which the quality of education is raised is the creation of Advance Placement Classes in the United States of America in which a college curriculum is offered to high school students to give students an advantage in the tertiary level. With 36 students screen through an aggressive examination, this nucleus of a science high school had its beginnings in a single-storey building in Intramuros. March 28, 1963 witnessed the awarding of a gold medal to each of the 32 graduates of the Special Science Class. (Vargas, 2011)

Due to the success of the Special Science Class, Manila Science High School, the Pilot Science High School in the Philippines was established in 1963, following the Special Science Curriculum taken by the Special Science Class.
