According to experts, “Today around seven in ten Americans use social media to connect with one another, engage with news content, share information, and entertain themselves” (Pew Research Center 2018). The effect of social media has made businesses grow and expand for the best and even caused some to fail and foreclose. Businesses create an online store so that people all over the world have access to it instead of only offering its service to the people that live in the area. An example of this is online clothing stores or apps that have people do the shopping for you and delivers it to your home. It makes it easier for their consumers to still buy from their store even if they don’t have the time to come into the store themselves. It also opened the chance for companies to network with one another. Networking is a way for businesses or people to connect with one another to share knowledge and receive word-of-mouth referrals to help with getting an internship or job (Department of Industry, Innovation, and Science, 2017). A website called LinkedIn is a great way to network because it lets people enter in the work and school experience and connect them to people that they may know because the attend the same things. It also makes it easy to find jobs that would be best for the field that you would like to go into.
Everyday a business succeeds or fail but that is always up to the way an owner chooses to run it. There are many things that the internet and social media has effect on a business but the main things that builds a business is making connections, communicating with the consumers, knowing how to sale that product, and making it seen. Each year numerous amount of people become a social media user. The eMarketer website estimated that by 2019 “there will be around 2.77 billion social media users around the globe, up from 2.46 billion in 2017” (1). A great deal of those users utilizes social media to communicate their opinion to other users; as a matter of fact, these users might change their perspective a certain person might have on a topic. Social media is a marketing tool, therefore people utilize those social media platforms to pursue, and even manipulate the public to think in a certain way; hence, why social media can influence the public opinion.
