The main purpose of this research was to find out the job satisfaction of special education teachers teaching in private school of Lahore in the context of Existence, Relatedness and Growth theory by Clayton Alderfer.
The first objective of this research was to find out the level of Existence need in special education teachers. The second objective of the research was to find out the level of Relatedness need in the special education teachers. The third objective of the study was to find out the level of Growth need in special education teachers. The present study utilized Alderfer’s existence, relatedness, and growth (ERG) theory of human needs as the basic framework to investigate job satisfaction of special education teachers. Alderfer’s (1967) modified hierarchy of needs theory. ERG expands further Maslow's widely acknowledged hierarchy of needs theory by categorizing needs into three groups, Existence, Relatedness and Growth needs. The lower order needs (physiological and safety) are grouped into the Existence category, the levels of love and esteem needs into the Relatedness category, while the Growth category contains the self-actualization and self-esteem needs (Kakkos et al., 2010). Question 25-28 were used in the questionnaire to obtain answers. The Growth need in the special education teachers with overall mean of 4.35 shows that Growth need is highly satisfied. The results are consistent with the result of Dinham, Robbins and judge as mentioned by (Ngimbudzi, 2009) that self-growth and advancement in profession brings job satisfaction. The majority of the respondent (93 % teachers) agreed that they use their all skills and abilities in teaching to special students, moreover 91 % agreed that they are satisfied with their identity as special education teachers.
The third objective of the research was to find out the Growth need in special education teachers. The Growth need consists of facets of training and development and self-actualization. The special education teachers are satisfied with training and development opportunities they have as with the mean score of 4.34. And the mean score of self -actualization is 4.36. The overall mean score of 4.35 which is greater than mentioned above needs show that Growth need is highly satisfied among special education teachers.
