Reflection On Communication Class

This month, I began a long-term kindergarten substitute assignment that will last for 12 weeks. The teacher team teaches with the teacher next door, Mrs. Williams. I teach her class writing for one hour a day and she teaches mine social studies during the same hour. This is a group of children I have been working with most the year and I am familiar with the classroom. The day begins with picking up the students from the library to bring them to class at 7:50am. When I arrive to get them, they are always excited to tell me what they did the day before or ask me what I have planned for the day. We walk to the class and they are generally excited and happy to be in school.

These factors play a huge role in how I approach them when teaching and how I deal with conflict they experience within the classroom with other teachers and children. One child needs a lot of one on one and constant reassurance. He has lost both parents and he is not able to deal with his emotions when he becomes frustrated or upset. It presents a challenge when I know he can complete his work, but he chooses not to do it because he wants me to sit with him and focus on him while he works. When I cannot give him the attention he needs/wants he will responsible in a hostile way throwing papers, pencils, or stomping off and crying. Sometimes he will throw a fit and I must change his behavior color for the day and give him time out at recess, which can exasperate the situation. However, it is important to help him see his actions have consequences. I am aware of the emotional conflicts he deals with and therefore I have learned how to better respond to him while still making him understand I care about him and want him to
