Life education
Life, the way most of us have lived it so far, has been similar to a long distance journey on a fast-moving train. Every once in a while, there have been halts to relax, walk around and soak-in the ambience but the majority of it has gone by in a flash. These pauses, as in a train journey, have been few and far between and can be easily counted on the fingers of one hand - the end of schooling, the culmination of higher studies, the start of the courtship period, long vacations with family and friends, etc. The journey between these stoppages, however, has been a mad dash from one stop to another. The most common reasons are the failure to perform in competitive examinations, stressful relationships, underachievement and financial difficulties. Conventional education system seldom talks about how to face such problems, fix them and reestablish life’s balance. These problems, unfortunately, show up at regular intervals in our lives and owing to the absence of any formal ‘life education’, the tools required to tackle them are, at best, premature. One may argue that sound finances can help in seeing off most of the life’s troubles. But, more than a high pay package, life is about living cheerfully amidst the never-ending failures and the countless difficulties of life. It hardly makes any sense to earn crores if one does not have a sound mental and social health - getting promoted on a day when one has had an altercation with a loved one can’t possibly bring any joy or contentment. It is for dealing with such issues that ‘life education’ can be of more importance than any other education - imagine a day when one wakes up with a very clear understanding of what to pursue, whom to talk to, how to face life’s difficulties and why to keep searching for life’s meaning. Student loans pose as a suitable way out of this issue as it provides a pathway for those of lower- or middle-class to pursue further education; however, this puts the individual in serious financial debt. The author effectively suggests that since the individuals who choose to pursue higher education will ultimately use that knowledge to help their society then society should realize the value of education and fund any associated costs. Everyone should have fair financial access to post-secondary education so that it is not deemed a “luxury good”. Some people carry the responsibility of repaying student loans well into their adulthood. The writer suggests these people should consider a different pathway in order to not deal with that responsibility. Even if financial difficulties can possibly be taken care of, college brings on rigorous academic challenges as well. Not every student is equipped with the skills to succeed in college; in fact, Pharinet states that, “there are students who cannot read attending college” (Pharinet 680). Although a rare case, it completely goes against the idea that college is for everyone.
Young adulthood can also be a threatening time because choices made at this time often have a lifelong impact on the individual. What learning tasks gave me the greatest difficulties? It’s easy for me to understand many issues which are related different periods of one’s life. However, I don’t understand the concept ageism, because it doesn’t show obviously in our society.
The concept of adulthood represents not only the sum of one's experiences, but also the determination of one's place within society. Adulthood is formed through the experiences of the individual. These experiences catalyze the acceptance of a social role, as opposed to title or paycheck. Finally, the acceptance of an individual's social role initiates a process of social unity. In this way, the sum of a person's experience and the changes that result from said experiences present the evolution of child into adult.
College debt forces students to budget carefully and make many sacrifices. Initially, a student may respond to their debt by rushing into any random career they can find in order to meet their payment requirements, which can set back their path to a more well-paying job that they may have been hoping for originally. This stifles one’s creativity and stops them from pursuing a career that they are actually passionate about. This can furthermore have a negative effect on one’s mental health and may lead them to feel unsatisfied with their lives. On the other hand, someone who is not struggling to repay their student debt “could be more choosy and take the time to find a job they truly enjoy.
In the story, “A Place Where the Sea Remembers” by Sandra Benitez, every character faces major difficulties of some sort. From Marta being raped to Don Justo’s daughter dying, there are twists and turns around every corner. A topic the author brushes upon is education and where it lies in society. By getting an education, anyone can acquire more wealth and can be useful in day to day life. “A boy’s education is very important” (Benitez 73).
Do schools have a responsibility to fill in the gaps when parents don’t educate their children about basics? It is often argued that it is never the responsibility of the school to teach students skills that are not academic. One may say that the way a student should be taught on the values of life are up the parents. Admittedly, teachers and parents are two different respected leaders in a students life. However, students spend a number of years in school with teachers who lead them into the direction of success academically, so what makes learning about life skills different?
Life course perspective is used in social science to help understand human development. It takes into account how a person grows and changes through life experiences. It looks at historical events as well as cultural changes that affect a person’ evolution over their life (The life course perspective, 2003-2018). Life course perspective states that there is complex interaction of social and environmental factors mixed with biological, behavioral, and physiological issues that define the course of a person’s life. Each stage in life exerts influences on the next stage, social, economic, and physical environments and they also have influences through a person’s life course.
People pass through different stages of development throughout their lives. In the process of this, many changes are experienced that affect the life course. There are various theories as well as theorist to choose from in order to gain a greater knowledge of an individual’s development. In this paper I will analyze the Life Course Perspective and Levinson’s Theory of Seasons of Adulthood. After analyzing these theories, I will apply the concepts of The Life Course Perspective and Levinson to my father’s life.
In school, the teachers are focused more on our academics than our life problems. Perhaps to develop or achieve professional goals, higher career status, professional security, or to personal goals, such as, seeking knowledge and new skills. As adult learners, they bring lived experiences and develop knowledge to the classroom, most are self-directed, goal oriented, therefore, have different ways in approaching learning and may require particular learning environments.
Learning Autobiography (LAB #1): Formal and Informal Educational Experiences My formal education was limited by internal and external forces. I will explore the effect of these influences. I will describe events from elementary and middle school that shaped my opinion of education, and why I did not see the importance of it. I will reflect on how my poor attitude and the indifference of the adults around me set the course for road I would take.
My educational journey has been an experience I will remember. I have attended school in three different countries, Antigua, St. Thomas, and New York. A diverse educational experience has allowed me to interact with many different cultures and confront many of the different topics we discussed in class. At that time however, I was not fully aware of the implications of certain situation but after many readings I can now fully understand many of the experiences I encountered in my journey. All the information I have learned in this class however will bring all my experience together where I can make much more sense of it than I could when I was younger.
What is the value of life? To me the value of life is cherishing every moment that comes to me. To make sure with every experience to take it to heart and learn some kind of lesson out of it. life is like a mountain, at certain points throughout the climb it is going to be really tough mentally and emotionally. Other times it’s going to be so easy fun and smoothe until… one hits that bump in the road again.
