Life education

Life, the way most of us have lived it so far, has been similar to a long distance journey on a fast-moving train. Every once in a while, there have been halts to relax, walk around and soak-in the ambience but the majority of it has gone by in a flash. These pauses, as in a train journey, have been few and far between and can be easily counted on the fingers of one hand - the end of schooling, the culmination of higher studies, the start of the courtship period, long vacations with family and friends, etc. The journey between these stoppages, however, has been a mad dash from one stop to another. The most common reasons are the failure to perform in competitive examinations, stressful relationships, underachievement and financial difficulties. Conventional education system seldom talks about how to face such problems, fix them and reestablish life’s balance. These problems, unfortunately, show up at regular intervals in our lives and owing to the absence of any formal ‘life education’, the tools required to tackle them are, at best, premature. One may argue that sound finances can help in seeing off most of the life’s troubles. But, more than a high pay package, life is about living cheerfully amidst the never-ending failures and the countless difficulties of life. It hardly makes any sense to earn crores if one does not have a sound mental and social health - getting promoted on a day when one has had an altercation with a loved one can’t possibly bring any joy or contentment. It is for dealing with such issues that ‘life education’ can be of more importance than any other education - imagine a day when one wakes up with a very clear understanding of what to pursue, whom to talk to, how to face life’s difficulties and why to keep searching for life’s meaning.
