Why School Should Start Later

Being able to sleep in for an hour later is every high schoolers dream. Unfortunately students have to get up early and get ready for school by 7:45. Many people say that schools should start later in the morning, so students could be more well rested. Many people do not consider the negatives of changing the time, and would students take that time to got to bed early. No, they would still stay up late because they would have the mindset of “Oh! School starts at 8:30; I can stay up another hour!”However, there are more problems than solutions to changing school times; therefore, school starting time should not be changed.

Wrong, Especially if a student is involved in extracurricular activities such as sports, band, or even having a job. Once a student athlete gets out of school after 3:00 pm, they have practice during the appropriate season which would have them returning home around 5 or 6 o’clock depending on the amount of practice needed. If schools change they school time they would get out later. Leaving sports to either not have practice or have to get out of practices super late. And if they have later practices then they would have to go home late and still have to do their homework. That puts them in bed later, meaning that they would still get the same amount of sleep. If they wanted to get a job most non- fast food places close at 5 o’clock, and if they get out of school at 4:00 then they would not get enough hours to make a decent profit. Students they would work in fast- food would not get off until 10:00 - 10:30, yet they would still have to do homework, if needed.
If schools start at 8:00 or 8:30 parents of young children would have to pay for before school care for children, or they would have to be late for work everyday on order to take their kids to school. Finding someone to watch them could become a hassle; parents have a better chance of finding an after- school babysitter than an early morning babysitter.
