How many people think cheerleading is a sport? According to the Google Dictionary, a sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another for entertainment, and cheerleading follows these guidelines. There are a three different types of cheerleading. The first one is sideline cheering, which is like high school cheer. The second one is competition and the last one is college cheer.

A sport says that you must physically exert yourself. In cheer, especially competitive, you work on routines a hundred times to make them perfect. Competition cheer works on two minute routines for hours at practices for weeks before there competition. They make their routines so perfect that I'm sure every cheerleader could do it in their sleep. They also do jump sequences, which is about four jumps in a row and they do them over and over again until everyone is doing them at the same time. Their jumps are also hyper extended. This means that their legs can go above your hips. They also have much more complicated stunts. They throw the fliers twice as high and do more complicated stunts like liberties and scorpions. In addition to all this they do conditioning. Conditioning is basically workouts designed to make everything easier in cheer. They can be very difficult after you've had a full evening of cheerleading. After getting the routines all ready the teams compete against each other in competitions that can be local, regional, national, or worldwide. The national competitions tend be more and important and can also be shown on TV.

Sideline cheerleading is the type of cheer done in high school. This type of cheerleading is not considered to be a sport. It is not taken seriously and there is not as much work put into it as competition cheer does.
