Over the past several years, additional students are bringing music to class, but is it actually helping? It is near impossible to stroll into a classroom without seeing others pulling out headphones. Doing this to help focus, or just because others do it is no excuse to not be able to explain why you do it. Memorization and performance is said to improve as the more music goes into your ears, but others do not think the same. Students currently have been listening to music while studying more, relieving stress as they go, but do they really know if it is benefiting their knowledge or is it just setting them up for failure.

Songs that stimulate a bright and cheery mood are most beneficial to getting motivated, people like to do this for any long and tremendous activity. For example, marathon runners have headphones in and are jogging in place to get motivated, this can be used exactly the same way for school work. Furthering this idea, certain types can benefit different types of moods you need to get in the head space to do work. It really just depends on what type of music you are listening to. Soft and calm music is more beneficial for working where as harder or more cheery music helps motivate and get inspired. As Well as listening to the music, playing the music helps too. Pbs did a study on six year olds testing their IQ. The kids that had been learning piano a week prior scored higher on the test. Besides learning to play music, the school subject can make an impact too. For any subject that involves writing or reading it is good to stick to non-lyrical music and for anything else music type does not matter. In high stress situations always go the calm music route and everything turns out fine.

Now it’s up to the reader to decide if that want to listen to music or not, everyone has their own preference, but hopefully this will give them a different outlook on studying or working with music.
