This paper will explain the seven principles of patient-clinician communication. It will then apply three of those principles to my interactions with my patients. Next, it will describe three methods being used in my area of practice to improved communication between the patients and clinicians. It will ultimately choose one of those principles that applies best to my practice and clearly describe how I use it. It will describe ethical principles that can be applied to issues with patient-clinician communication.
“Consent, an issue for the Patient” In 1951, Henrietta Lacks’ cells were taken without her knowledge and to this day are still being used , she never got any type of recognition for that either both financially and publicly . Giving permission to doctors to do what they want with your body is a big debate today . Some people believe that there is no need for doctors to ask , and others think if somebody has something the world needs there is no such thing as permission . These people also believe that your body should be at the full disposal of the doctors . If it is your body you should be the only person in charge of what happens to it .
My experience in medical school has taught me that I do, in fact, exercise the characteristics vital to being an excellent internist. My altruistic nature leads me to be compassionate to every person I encounter: patients, coworkers, and friends alike. I have already worked in several different locations around the world, I have treated patients of different cultures and learned about many new cultures through my practice. Yet, the most consistent fact of my tenure came from how each of my patients were treated. Even in highly-stressful situations, I remained cool under pressure, treating said patients with the utmost respect and compassion.
Sometimes we think that having negative thoughts means that we are “crazy” or “mentally-ill,” but I myself have once heard my doctor say that most of the time that is completely normal, with some exceptions. Expression of body language is important when analyzing a medical case. It feels almost like a sixth sense, but for a reason unknown, I can tell when she is “on the same page” as I am. To realize that doctors are human too is empowering, in my opinion, because this gives us the opportunity to develop a relationship of trust and it reassures us that we are not
Without strong communications, this team may not find their balance. It is important to collaborate and build this trust among the office members. The doctors can’t effectively lead change without the understanding of the staff to make the necessary
Before conducting this research I hypothesized that physicians’ experiences could help improve health policy and health law. My hypothesis was based on the fact that physicians have first-hand experience with what is going on in the healthcare system and are the ones that have to carry out health laws and policies. So, by listening to the experiences of physicians, policymakers could gain insight on what is working, not working and what needs to be improved within the healthcare system. The question that this study focused on was what is the hospitalist experience with New York’s Family Health Care Decisions Act (2010) at the University of Rochester Medical Center? In regard to this Act I wanted to see how using hospitalists’ experiences could be used to improve the Act.
The controversy over the roles of physicians and nurse practitioners in primary care in the United States has been heatedly discussed over the past years. Although many may not even know the difference between the two, the issue is very important to those with the careers. A nurse practitioner is an alternative career for professionals who want to work in advanced healthcare but do not wish to make the commitment necessary to become a physician ("Nurse Practitioner vs Physician Assistant."). Physicians and nurse practitioners are different in their education and approach to care. Physicians study medicine and disease, while nurse practitioners study how to care for the sick.
There is a high significance for a nursing student completing their degree in nursing to start their career as a nurse practitioner. Nursing students must prepare to become nationally certified by an accredited body upon completion of their schooling in order to advance their career (AANP, 2016). This academic accreditation process helps to show that the students have met the requirements to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in their population focus testing. The scope of practice will be affected based on the certification that the practitioner obtains. If the Nurse Practitioner obtains a certification as a nurse specialists in pediatrics, oncology, geriatrics, emergency medicine, etc.
As an aspiring healthcare professional, I constantly seek the thrill of problem solving, especially from a scientific standpoint. One of my many interests includes a strong affinity towards the field of the unknown. With the plethora of opportunities granted to me over my high school years, I have been eager enough to explore the different realms of science and build a passion for medicine. A truly spectacular memory was the first time I set foot in an OR room. I still recall the pit of nervousness at the bottom of my stomach as I walked into the sterile room occupied with important people I hoped to be one day.
The charts above show the percentages of both our class and the general public’s data of the people who’s had contact with a Doctor. • The general public’s data was from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in the “Summary Health Statistics for U.S.Adults: National Health Interview Survey, 2012” • Both charts are very close to each other, which is a good thing because most of you know how healthy you are • But if you are part of the 21 percent, I will not leave you out because the Center for Disease Control can also calculate which category you are in when you input your height and weight, but it is highly recommended to go in for a
As a first generation student to attend college from a family of seven, the journey to a higher education has been arduous and overwhelming. My family gives me all the encouragement I need and are very optimistic about pursuing a higher degree. Unlike myself, my parents did not have the opportunity to attend college. My parents were born and raised in a small town in Mexico where the highest level of education they received was fifth grade. I have worked since I was 14 years old to support my parents with bills, and also saving for college and my own vehicle.
PATIENT CARE EXPERIENCE AND PARTNERING IN CARE Name of Student Institution Affiliation Patient care experience and Partnering in care Health care is continuously evolving with improvements in cures and medical equipments. Nevertheless, this does not transform into better health care delivery. This clinical experience has really helped me to sharpen my communication skills and realize just how important it is to understand mental health. We are told multiple times in class that mental health issues can be seen on any floor and that is the truth. I’ve seen patients in my older adult clinical on the pulmonary floor suffer from issues that range from anxiety to bipolar disorder and depression. Being able to understand how to approach people that suffer from these types of illnesses, allows us, the nurses, to give the patient the best care that we can. It helps to build a trusting relationship and get to know them on a personal level.
