ABSTRACT This study tends to explore politeness strategies used in Piers Morgan Tonight which is known as famous talk show of CNN in New York that is hosted by Piers Morgan. Conversation between Piers Morgan and Beyoncé indicates politeness strategies used for interaction to attain success in communication. Basing on Brown and Levinson theories (1987), this study will concentrate on analyzing two politeness strategies used in talk show namely Positive politeness, Negative politeness as well as assessing the choice of these strategies. Brown and Levinson (1987) researched and concluded that the aim of politeness strategies is to save “face” which is defined as “the public self image that every member wants to claim for himself”. In conversation, participants can have acts which in some way threaten the 'face ' or self-esteem of another person (called Face-threatening acts by Brown & Levinson) so politeness strategies tend to avoid these threatening acts. “Manners, Morals, Customs, and Public Perception,” by Judge Paul Heath Till is an essay reflecting on the Southern culture Till grew up with and how it is slowly conforming to today’s Northern society. Till asserts that the simple courteousness that had set the standard for Southern behavior has been diminished and targeted by the media and egalitarian America. He argues that this process must not only cease, but that Southern culture should instead be adopted into American society. Till’s diction and point of view suggest a condescending tone and bias against Northern culture, minimizing the reliability of his argument.
The Transition of Civility In today’s commercial age, many of us have experienced awkwardness in the conversations with service workers. In “The Civility Glut”, Barbara Ehrenreich addresses the issue of excessive formality and politeness within day to day communications in America. She begins with examples of the so called “civility glut” in the popular media and her personal life, then gives background information explaining why this is happening. Her transition in rhetorical approach from comedic narrative to thoughtful definition has played an important role in directing reader’s attention and opinion.

His humble introduction sets a peaceful tone for his speech. This offsets the potential for a defensive attitude within the audience. In appearing agreeable and humble, the audience relaxes.
In the textbook Let's Talk written by Andrea Lunsford, new ideas and habits are introduced that will help people learn how to communicate better and interact with others. The first four chapters revealed concepts that were used by the authors of the following readings: "Arranging a Marriage in India," "Your Smartphone is making you stupid," and "Small Change". The concept that influenced the understanding of “Arranging a Marriage in India” is to get to know people different from you. Next, the concept that influenced the understanding in “Your Smartphone is making you stupid” is to research your views. Lastly, the concept that increased understanding of “Small Change” was to listen when people express their views.
This theory was made by Michael Argyle (1925- 2002), who was a social psychologist. In the late 1960s he studied social skills, body language, non-verbal communication and interpersonal behaviour. In this study, he found that non-verbal signals can be much more important and useful than verbal communication when trying to trigger peoples’ attitudes and feelings. His research showed and found that the stronger the relationship between the people communicating so with close friends for example the much better eye contact. However, when the relationship is not very strong so when speaking to a stranger people don’t have very good eye contact and they tend to look away when talking.

Commonly when approaching a peer, teacher, or a stranger, the first phrase to be said is often a form of polite speech. Polite speech can be categorized by the use of phrases that show regards for others. With some people backing the sense that what is said is portrayed as literal speech, most of it is said for the sake of sounding welcoming and responsible. Having polite speech implemented into people’s day to day lives serves the function of creating a well developed impression of a person.
Over the years, mass communication has been defined in several ways. While some view it as a process, others perceive it as a skill. But apart from these two classifications, I particularly view mass communication as a tool since it is an essential device that can be used in one’s everyday life. It is an instrument all humans can make use of in delivering their intended messages to their family, friends and even to strangers. Code switching is a switch in the way you speak or the language you speak, Sometimes codes switching is formal or in formal speech. Code switching is something you do around your friends, family, school, and work. It is something very important because it helps with every conversation you may have at school, home or work. Schools make this a requirement to code switch because it helps to improve your communication with others, which is good for a future job interview and speaking with law enforcements. I feel like school made this a requirement for everybody because it helps to know when to speak properly and when you’re talking to friends.
