Advantages And Disadvantages Of Living In College Dorms
COLLEGE DORMS: AN INSPIRATION OR OBSTACLE FOR STUDENTS PROGRESS
Whilst some may argue that east or west home is best, it is only safe to infer that one can have a home away from home. Residing in the college dorms is a once in a life time experience that most if not all campus students yearn to have. Undeniably, many prefer college dorms to commuting from home. In this modern day and age, colleges are providing accommodation within the school’s vicinity. Statistics from The College Board show that for public colleges about 40% of the students and 64% in private colleges stay on-campus. However, there has been a stereotype on college dorms based on the perception that if students are not closely monitored and reproached, they get spoilt. This is not entirely authentic.

Opportunities of exercising some degree of self reliance are availed. Unlike most households where chores such as doing laundry are done by a domestic assistant or with the aid of a washing machine for example, campus life teaches students that there comes a time when they ought to manually perform such tasks. This not only helps them to become self reliant but also teaches them to make individual decisions. Intrinsic motivation from self responsibility galvanizes progress.
Community living has its perks. Many lifelong friendships are built in college. The harshness that comes with campus life cannot be survived without having friends. As the sages say, no man is an island. Living with one’s peers in the college dorms helps to build the social and the emotional well being. The euphoria that comes with the dorm milieu makes it easier to bond with friends and broaden horizons.
