Research conducted by Development Dimensions International (DDI), a global training and staffing firm based in Bridgeville, PA confirms that a large number of companies will be faced with the departure of 40 % to 50 % of executives in the next five years. Early retirements, reorganizations and lean hierarchies have left companies without a pool of employees to move into these senior leadership roles. Fierce competition for qualified leaders is certain to result (Burke, 2006). The importance of leadership is well articulated by this observation: A good leader can make a success of a weak business plan, but a poor leader can ruin even the best plan. That’s why mounting effective leadership by using a consistent model at all levels across the organization can return significant business value. To identify, attract, fill, and retain corporate leadership talent, companies need leadership development programs focused on hiring strategies, employee development, career and succession …show more content…
This research has led to the belief that leadership development is an ongoing process. It is maximized by experiences that assess, challenge and support people. Leadership development processes that incorporate a variety of experiences are the most likely to be effective. According to CCL the most important developmental experiences are ones that challenge people. These experiences require people to develop new capabilities if they are going to be successful. The kinds of situations that challenge people are new experiences, experiences with difficult goals, dealing with conflict and dealing with loss, failure or disappointment. CCL research and practice supports the use of skill-based training experiences and challenging job assignments for leadership development. Challenging experiences are most powerful when they possess an element of support. Support can come from bosses, coworkers, family, friends or mentors. Lisa Cash Hanson said, "Leadership is the ability to guide others without force into a direction or decision that leaves them still feeling empowered and accomplished. Leadership isn't about remembrance or fame, it's about the impact, inspiration, and the influence you have on others.

Leaders come in many different shapes and forms. Some leaders only care about the business and task at hand, some leaders care too much for their employees, and other leaders have a great mix of both worlds; those are the types of leaders to have in every company. Leaders need to be fully invested not only in the business to succeed, but they need to make sure their employees are taken care of just as well as the company. Within this paper will discuss the reasons that leaders need to be involved not only within the business, but with the employees too. Theodore Roosevelt described how a caring leader should be in the workforce.

The paper reports the collected data that covered in average 1,600 people of healthcare staff - first line clinical managers to executive directors – during 13 years time span. The large population that was reviewed in a long-term duration added a strong trustworthiness to the author’s argument. In addition, the author backed his statements and analytic data with peer-reviewed

There are many different views and perceptions on leadership and what it exactly means. This is because there are many different types of leaders and many different views on them. But the basic meaning of leadership is an individual who can select the right group of followers and influence them through their distinct gifts, abilities, skills and knowledge. A leader focuses on the follower and puts out a roadmap to the overall mission and vision; hereby the follower is influenced to willingly and enthusiastically in achieving the mission and vision. LEADERSHIP LESSONS FROM SPORTS What is Leadership? Leadership is defined as the ability to influence a group towards the achievement of a vision or set of goals. The source of this influence may be formal, as happens by organizational hierarchy. However, this does not imply that every manager is a leader or only managers are leaders. An awareness of leadership styles and their consequences are very important because it may either facilitate or inhabit skill development. The major theories on leadership are the traits, leadership styles and contingency theories.

Organizational success usually requires a combination of both management and leadership.
