Workplace Literacy To begin, I would like to explain my background involving the English language because my background is probably very different from others. My background in learning English is not typical, meaning I did not have in-depth studies in the English language. I was born and raised in Cairo Egypt. Throughout my school years, my involvement with the English language was limited. I mostly studied compositions, dictation, poetry and novels.
Learning English as a second language can be a struggle for many immigrants across the world, especially when they simultaneously have to find a job, support their families and sometimes even attend school. ESL classes are provided for immigrants in order to improve their English and help them find a good job and acclimate into Canadian society. Both children and adult newcomers struggle when it comes to learning English and taking ESL classes on top of an already stressful life, but learning English has shown to be a much easier process when working in groups. Aside from learning grammar and spelling it is essential to know how to properly converse with other people in English and communicate in an understandable and relatively fluent manner and who better to practice one’s conversation skills then with other immigrants in the same position. Group work has proven to be effective in many situations which is why it should be more often applied to language learning and as Weimer (1987) suggested, “No matter how much we hate or love group work; it is one of the effective strategies of learning a lesson that creates a powerful learning experience among students and that activity as group work has the potential to develop students’ progression in new information, which accelerates learning” (p. 2).
understand that my upbringing is different from my students because many of them are raised with different cultural beliefs. I must also hold my students from a different background to the same esteem and expectation as I would have for students from my background. In order to be culturally competent it is important to recognize your history and how it may shapes your beliefs about other cultures. Sometimes you may have have biases that you are oblivious to.
Understanding English helps immigrants find better jobs, reducing poverty and increasing the nation’s economy. Upon immigration to any country, one of the first things one must do is find a job. However, if one cannot speak the language of their new country, many employers find it disadvantageous to hire foreigners who are not English proficient. In Blackwell 's article “English Should Be America’s Official Language” he says that “[people] who can speak English can compete for better jobs, with better pay,” as they have one of the most basic skills required for most jobs in America (par. 10). In fact, some employers are even requiring their employees to only speak English while on the job.

Nowadays in college when a literacy test is given most kids fail.
Speaking English becomes one of substantial ability for people nowadays that can be one of causes I have studied in Canada. People are exposed many field where they should use English language when people are surfing internet, reading original major program books even meeting foreign people in work places. These reasons are that why I have learned English since elemental school student in Korea; nevertheless, my English ability was struggled. Since, they taught to focus on only English grammar not practical speaking. Consequently, I decided to come to Canada.
Of my point of view, I think it is important to fluency in the native language because it often helps to learn any other language. Parents must make an effort to make their children use to live with other nationalities, they must also have to be educated academically because they will understand what their children need better than parents do not have a good academic level. I read in some articles that there are some states in the US are making considerable efforts to help immigrant student families who do not speak English by translate the basic information that the family has to be knowing it. The goal of this is to educate the immigrant parents. I see this is only a preliminary solution, because it is very necessary to have parents or

Stating the importance of culture must be assessed when teaching English Language Learners, ELLs. The challenges for many English Language Learners are not overcoming a language barrier but also achieving academically. Orosco and O’Connor state that “ELLs bring a wealth of cultural and linguistic knowledge into the classroom, but perhaps our schooling is a complex process that often separates students’ personal learning experiences from the classroom resulting in a challenge of acquiring the skills for reading instruction”.
