Low English Proficiency In Malaysia

Recently, a report showed 70% out of 60000 Malaysia English teachers had bad performances during the English Language Cambridge Placement Test .Same happens in MUET which represent English proficiency of university students. Out of 100000 candidates, only 10000 candidates manage to achieve “good” and “competent” level. This illustrated low English proficiency in Malaysia. English proficiency is defined as the capability of a person to communicate or perform in English. English is recognized as the Lingua Franca and play a vital role in education, business, scientific and technology. Therefore, improvement of English proficiency is the priority to many developing countries. The problem cause by low English proficiency is affect job performances …show more content…

Firstly, low English proficiency cause communication problem in occupation. Communication skills in English are crucial as English are the official language in major companies and as international business language due to globalization. Low proficiency in English may causes a person unable to communicate well with foreign colleague or employer and even cannot deal with international clients efficiently. Sternkopf (2005,p52) revealed that “most companies replied that they need English for communications with customers and business partners(69.4%) followed by exhibitions and trade shows(43.1%).Moreover for contact to international organization(38.9%), contact to head office or subsidiaries(29.2%) and for conferences and training seminars. Besides, low English proficiency affect professional in career. To stay employed or get promotion in a competitive work place, employees need to improve their professional knowledge and skills periodically. Professional development can be done by attending courses, doing research , participate conference, reading books or online articles related to career professional which are generally using English. Consequently, low English competency will hinder the professional development. For instances, 1000 medical trainees had abandon their desire to become doctor even though accomplished 2 years internship in public hospitals due to low English proficiency (MURALI,2015). Furthermore, low English proficiency will limit capability of a person. Teamwork would achieve a better outcome and a person unable to contribute in team if without English fluency especially in multi-linguistic world. In nowadays, job scope include of handling paperwork, document, IT system usage that requires English competency.
