My leadership philosophy is based on a set of values that I try to model and expect others to aspire to and attain. While I have never been in a supervisory position, I believe leaders often stand in front but rather leads from within and true leadership transcends any position on an organizational chart. Above all, I believe that the two most important assets of a leader are sound vision and impenetrable integrity. We all understand how to be a good Soldier. We must not only know those values, we must encompass them. As Dempsey says; (2010) “The Army Ethic begins with the moral values the Army defends” (p. 12). As a Human Resources Sergeant in the Profession of Arms, we have a calling. We have been called upon to take care of so many in so many different ways. This is not a small undertaking, nor should it be taken as such. We are experts and we are professionals. We are in the position we find ourselves for a reason, and as long as we continue to keep our moral values close to us, the Father in Heaven will guide
Many seem to over emphasize the many privileges gained as an officer and seem to completely overlook the ever more important duties that should be the true motivators. I must ensure to maintain this mindset. I must also remember to put “people first”. (Department of Defense, 1988) This will be a cornerstone in every decision I make. Lastly, as a Warrant Officer I am expected to be the subject matter expert in my field. With no knowledge of my personality or past, Soldiers will expect me to have a high amount of knowledge on my particular field; therefore, I will need to ensure their trust in my knowledge is not wasted.
Chief Petty Officers owe to their organizations a sound understanding of leadership. Senior Enlisted Leaders (SEL’s) are retained in the military primarily to serve as leaders who effectively maximize the efforts of others so the Navy and Coast Guard can achieve its goals. Effective leaders in the chief’s mess set the tone and are visible amongst the command while constantly leading by example. This paper will explain the author’s leadership philosophy, refer to several influential leaders throughout his career, and incorporate three leadership behaviors from the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) feedback.
In order to run a successful organization, especially a good standing Army, there needs to be quality leaders within the organization. Leaders are artists, remaining flexible and adaptable in order to conform to any certain situation. In FM 6-22, leadership is defined as, “the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization”. The vast majority of successful Army leaders exemplify this definition in their everyday life. So, what exactly does this process involve? In developing this paper on leadership, I examined what was most important to me as a leader. As I reflected on my leadership philosophy, I thought about my experiences and the principals that I have learned through my own self-discovery and the observation of other leaders that I have had throughout my life. My leadership philosophy paper will focus on what leadership is to me, core values, and knowledge of others.
Leaders must apply the Army Values when leading soldiers because of the fact that it builds trust and a bond. The same goes for the soldiers, in order for them both to work as an effective team and to get the mission done efficiently they both must live by these values. Once these values are integrated in a soldier’s lifestyle, it becomes too easy to work as a unit. An example on how loyalty and respect fits in a day to day to situation would be, a soldier witnessing a misunderstanding with his or her team leader and a higher ranking NCO, the soldier knows that his or her team leader is in the right. The soldier shows loyalty by standing by their team leader and shows respect by approaching both their team leader and the higher ranking NCO with tact to explain the situation from their understanding and what they witnessed. When a soldier and leader applies integrity into their day to day operation, they trust each other to do the right thing at all times. Honor plays also plays a major part in a soldier’s and leader’s work environment as well, that is just living up to the Army Values. Once they develop that habit they’re showing that they are honorable. An individual shows selfless service simply by put others before yourself. This is the mindset one must have especially on the battle field, because in that situation you are not fighting for yourself, you are fighting for the man or woman to the left or right of you so that they can make it home to their loved ones. Leadership in the Army is the fundamental foundation of the organization. Leaders like Officers and Non- Commission Officers implement and set the standard of leader to soldiers. These leaders ensure the Army soldiers are trained and prepare for any hardships they face. The term Leadership can be defined differently based on the organization in which the term is applied to. The Army Values and warrior ethos have a lot a meaning and I try my best to live them every day on and off duty, but there are 3 Army Values that mean a lot to me and they are Loyalty, Respect, and Personal Courage. Loyalty is being able to support and stand by your unit, your leadership, and the people you work. Having Loyalty to your unit and leadership can make the work environment a better place. To the Leaders of the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command and Eighth Army: Thank you for the opportunity to present my character and accomplishments before you. This proved difficult because nothing I have accomplished is of my own doing; it is the result of a long list of Leaders and Warriors who have invested their time, trust, and energy to mentor and guide me. And so with that I will begin with the Army Values.
The transition from enlisted into the ranks of officer is not a situation that anyone should take lightly. With greater rank comes greater responsibility, I emphatically understand the prestige and responsibility that comes with this transition. In this essay, I will answer three questions. Why do I want to be a military officer? What does society expect from me as a military officer? What are three of my soon to be responsibilities as an officer? The leadership can be defined as the ability of a superior to have influence on behavior and action of subordinates and motivate them to follow the specific course of action (Barnard, 1938). The effective leadership is the key element in the success and life of an organization. It is the quality of an effective leadership to transform potentials into reality. One of the most distinguishing qualities of the effective leadership is to adopt new ways of performing a specific job when old system loses its effectiveness. The literature on leadership is enormous and there are number of model and theory of leadership but none of them offers satisfactory explanation of leadership. There are number of conceptual frameworks for leadership
