Defining the “Dropout” Drop-out is defined as premature termination of an educational cycle. A general definition includes categories wider than formal education, including organized educational activities and courses. A term is used to describe individuals who leave an activity, a course, a Programme, or a school, before completing its requirements (Dejnozka and Kapel 1991:185). However, the term is more commonly used in formal education and in the first or second level, i.e. at primary or secondary schools. The term 'drop-out ' most often describes an secondary school student who has been in membership during the regular school term and who withdraws or is dropped from membership (Good 1973:198). The common definitions of drop-out agree in assuming the early termination of a cycle or stage. Some describe this situation of pupils or students who leave school before completing a school year or a particular level of studies (Ortiz and Basile 1982:56).

Andy Blevin dropped out of college due to key barriers that all other American college students are forced to deal with. These key barriers such as finances and lack of motivation challenged Blevin, and caused him to leave school. One of the major key barriers that caused him to dropout of college was motivation, “I enjoyed working hard, getting the job done, getting a paycheck,” Blevins recalled. “I just knew I didn’t want to quit.” (88).
Dropout nation showed the struggles that 4 students at Sharpstown High go through on a daily basis that no normal teen should go through trying to earn their high school diploma. All 4 of these students came from terrible home situations that distracted them from learning. It is different than just looking at the micro level because the reasons for the dropout rate do not just apply to one person or family, but a larger audience. One reason for the high college dropout rate could be high schools are not preparing students properly. At the high school level, students are not treated the same as they are in college. The course work can be easier, teachers do not give their students as much freedom, and there are much longer hours in class. All of these aspects sound good for the high school level, however, they can be the polar opposites of how students are treated in college.
