Introduction I have a dream of serving others in great times of need. To fully commit to this dream, I believe that I will be best suited to begin this journey when I enter retirement. After some critical comparison between the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the American Red Cross, I have found that the Red Cross is a most versatile organization with opportunities to serve every day. Both organizations are incredible humanitarian programs, but when comparing the two as if I were a retiree, I found that the Red Cross has many more everyday programs, whereas FEMA seemed more like beginning a second career. During this time, I noticed the difference in care provided between the doctor and the nurse. The nurse offered a more trusting relationship, emphasized the use of holistic care, and provided empathy, which was much appreciated. Thereafter, I began volunteering at Lowell General Hospital and experienced my own interpersonal relationships with the outpatients. Volunteering at McKenna Farms Therapy Services I was able to observe pediatric occupational therapy sessions. Not only did I get to observe Occupational Therapy sessions, but I observed Hippotherapy sessions too. What I found so unique about McKenna Farms is that they had Speech Therapist, Physical Therapist, and Occupational Therapist all together at one clinic. This allowed me to witness how the different types of therapy fit together and how the therapist would collaborate to find the best way to treat the children. My favorite part was finding ways to communicate with the kids.
My reasons for wanting to serve Peace Corps Volunteer are personal and intellectual. Often in life, we come across situations that may stretch us and challenge us, finding ourselves forced to get out of our comfort zone. Volunteering is definitely not for everyone, people may not have the adequate time, confidence, knowledge. But that does not mean you avoid the situation at all times, you must allow yourself to step out of your comfort zone and experience things that you would never think about doing. On the first week of volunteering it was a bit intense for me, as I found it difficult and little bit sad to watch the women living the way they do, for some reason I felt that they were always missing their children and grandchildren. Some of the residents did not even have family so they never got visitations.
Ever since I can remember I have always wanted to make a difference and help anyone in need that I possibly could. From the start of my childhood, I can recall helping my mother care for my great grandparents, so they would be able to live out the rest of their lives from their home, instead of in a nursing home. As a young child it was extremely difficult to live with and watch my loved ones deteriorate as they got older, as their condition got worse and worse, and saw my mother having a difficult time keeping up with caring for both of my great grandparents 24/7, it put a lot of stress on the family. However, I am grateful to have been able to help my mother care for them. Growing up in such a caring and loving household made the situation
What is life’s most extraordinary pleasure? For many, money, power, and/or fame come to mind, and the idea of helping others does not register. It seems for every person eager to help, there are millions ready to hurt or disregard those in need. Nevertheless, the world is not beyond salvation; there are numerous individuals willing to give their time and labor to transform the world into a better place for all. These devoted people are volunteers, and they believe life’s most extraordinary pleasure is the joy of helping others.
Volunteering is a way of helping others. It is giving a person 's time and ability to help someone who may be in need of help. Not only does volunteering help others, but what they may not know is that it can be helpful to themselves. It is a great way for someone to interact with others in their community. It gives someone that time to themselves while also creating bonds when they are doing the greater good.
