Should School Start Later? Will it actually be a huge advantage for students to attend school later in the day? This has been a rising argument over the years, and the health of teens, because of their increased tiredness has been an increasing concern of parents, and teachers and supervisors. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has been urging schools to start at later times such as 8:30 to ensure that students get adequate amounts of sleep every night (Source 2).
Later School Start Times “About 90% of the teens, problem is insufficient sleep” (Dr. Chen), most of the adolescents are suffering of sleep deprived which is unabling them to be healthy and pay attention in class. Many of the schedules that are given in schools are the worst for teens because one one the things they require them to do is to wake up early to attend to the classes. Middle and High School start times should start later because it will benefit students academic growth, and improve health . Starting school times later will make teen have an academic growth. Starting school later could help teens academically because, they would be more attentive to any work or test that comes their way.
If school starts later kids could get more sleep and if kids get more sleep they’re less likely to develop bad health issues. In fact, middle school should start later.
In the article, “Our Kids Need More Sleep”, written by Valerie Erde, the author talks about school timing and discusses her opinion on whether it should be pushed back or remain the same. Erde mentions how if students get more sleep, they can report to school on time more often and also be ready to learn at all times. Because of this, she and others believe that school should not start as early as it does. I agree that students need more sleep but I do not agree with her on changing the school timing because kids would still not get enough sleep
Have you ever woke up really early in the morning and thought, man school should really start later? Well I completely agree, for three reasons actually. My reasons are one when you start school your brain in not fully awake enough to learn to its fullest potential, two the absentee rate would decrease by a bunch, and three it would improve test scores by a dramatic fashion. In the next three paragraphs I will give you facts that will show you that these are in fact true. My first fact is that students aren’t awake enough in their first block class to really even get enough out of it.
Schools should start later because that way students could get more hours of sleep. Otherwise, students will start to get bad grades in school, there athletic performance might decrease and they would feel different about themselves. Plus health experts recommend that students should get at least nine hours of sleep every night to work their best. Also students are extremely stressed in the morning and have rushing to get to school on time, which causes more stress at school. Imagine this, usually you get 8 hours of sleep every night, but then basketball season starts and you start practicing every night.

Kids don't start taking in information until 8:30AM because that is when the brain starts to really work. Not only do teens want to sleep more, but sleeping more actually improves their health.

Negative effects of sleep loss include impairments in mood, attention, memory, behavior and executive function… increase in caffeine use… sleep deprived-teens at higher risk of car accidents.” This means that by just adjusting the time by an hour students are more aware of their surroundings, more focused on what they’re learning, have a better mood, and executive function, and it reduces the amount of sugary snacks they have eat or drink to stay awake.
