Excellence in mathematics education requires equity. All students, regardless of their personal characteristics, backgrounds or physical challenges, can learn mathematics when they have access to high-quality mathematics when they have access to high-quality mathematics instruction. Equity does not mean that every student should receive identical instruction. Rather, it demands that reasonable and appropriate accommodations be made and appropriately challenging context is included to promote access and attainment for all students. A curriculum is more than a collection of activities; it must be coherent, focused on important mathematics, and well articulated across the grades. There are certain tools that are essential in schools for the success of education. Whether it be reading, writing, comprehending, or problem solving; these are all tools that are advantageous to possess in one’s education. Unfortunately, not all groups are able to acquire all these tools as easily as other groups are. It is unequivocal that education plays a major role in one’s future, but certain students cannot achieve their ideal education because of the lack of a proper education system. This is what leads to the inequality in education for students of color who are from an underprivileged area, compared to students on the contrary.
In the article “Idiot Nation”, Michael Moore states that America is a society full of idiots who are falling behind in education compared to other countries around the world. Moore gives examples of how Americans could not figure out how to solve the simplest school problems in their heads, or had a reading proficiency past a fourth grade level. Even so, Americans do not have a clue to where half of the countries are on the map (Moore, 121-40). But is the American education system really that bad in making students fail to succeed beyond what is expected of them? Compared to one of the world’s best education system, South Korean students excel in science and mathematics (Alters, 4).
Constantly, US schools in black and latino neighborhoods have been severely understaffed and underfunded. “A quarter of high schools with the highest percentage of black and Latino students do not offer Algebra II; a third of these schools do not offer chemistry” (Heffling). Schools not offering these basic courses to their students simply due to a lac of funding significantly impacts the performance of black and latino students in the post-secondary world. In fact, nearly 51% of all public school students come from a household that is near or below the federal poverty line (Layton).
