“13 Rules That Expire” by Karen S. Karp, Sarah B. Bush, and Barbara J. Dougherty, is a thought-provoking read because, for one thing, students do not actually know that these thirteen rules perish until someone notifies us. When I first read this article, it came to me as a bit of a shock. This is an article that all math teachers should read before teaching in a classroom. This article is about the rules that teachers use to teach math to younger students and how those rules will expire before they graduate from junior high school. Many teachers struggle with getting their students to understand math. Math is often one of the hardest subjects to learn. Teachers know rules that can help students, but often they forget that those rules become more nuanced than presented.
How often do you sit down and take the time to write? A lot? Almost never? You might be saying close to never and telling yourself there 's no need to be writing on a daily basis. However, that may be the case because you haven 't taken a deep look into all the reasons for why writing is so essential. Writing can help you in life through ways you never thought possible. Once you find out the importance of writing it might make you think twice about learning good writing skills. Knowing how to write well is a crucial skill to have, and I hope that everyone can take the time to learn some.
I was born in Anderson, Indiana, the first child and only daughter to a northern Pennsylvania-bred father and a southern-Louisiana mother. My family, and specifically the backgrounds of my parents, has had a profound impact on the person I am today. From my father, I inherited a strong work ethic and a determination to accomplish whatever I set out to do. My father was a teacher for many years and he instilled in me the importance of education and life-long learning. As a result, I’m still taking college courses and always looking to learn new things. From my mother, I got my sense of responsibility to family and to those around me. I have witnessed countless times when my mother reached out to people in their times of distress to help meet their material needs or just offer friendship and a listening ear. I
Ofsted’s 2012 report ‘Made to Measure’ states that even though manipulatives are being utilized in schools, they aren’t being used as effectively as they should be in order to support the teaching and learning of mathematical concepts. Black, J (2013) suggests this is because manipulatives are being applied to certain concepts of mathematics which teachers believe best aid in the understanding of a concept. Therefore, students may not be able to make sense of the manipulatives according to their own understanding of the relation between the manipulative and concept. Whilst both Black, J (2013) and Drews, D (2007) support the contention that student’s need to understand the connections between the practical apparatus and the concept, Drews,
In Marcus Hung’s article “Talking Circles Promote Equitable Discourse” the author talks about how he uses “talking circle” a structured discussion format to influence equitable student participation in his math class. As a math teacher he observed that during “Stratified classroom talk” or traditional whole-class discussions the majority of students who tend to volunteer and respond most frequently were students who were mathematically confident, and they were the same few students every time. Even in the small group discussions in his classroom Hung observed that most of the discussions were still done mainly by students who were mathematically confident. According to Hung, these discussion formats did not promote the equitable participation
working with metaphors – using objects such as figures and animals, using objects to represent themselves and others and placing them near as far away as the child wishes, art or creative play, masks or worksheets with faces showing different feelings and take what children say seriously and
Have you ever thought about the important role grammar plays in your professional career? In my professional career as a registered nurse grammar is very important. In Susan Adam article she proves why it is so important meanwhile in Kyle Wiens we see why it is important. I believe grammar is important in every professional career because if you do not communicate professionally then people will never understand what you are trying to say.
Both Skinner’s theory of operant conditioning and Pavlov’s theory of classical conditioning can be used every day in an ECCE setting. Today many school systems and childhood authorities follow Skinner’s and Pavlov’s theory by using the approach of positive reinforcement. This encourages good behaviour in the child making the behaviour more likely to be repeated again as they are rewarded and praised for their efforts in reading, writing and general learning. It is important that children’s efforts in a learning setting are rewarded as this will encourage the child to perform to the best of their ability. School authorities only use negative reinforcement as a last resort.
Physical education would start in just about 1820 when schools focused on gymnastics, hygiene training and care and development of the human body. By the year 1950, over 400 institutes had introduced majors in physical education. Colleges were encouraged to focus on intramural sports particularly track, field and football. But now, in the 21st Century schools are starting to rethink if they should have it in their curriculum. In our era right now children are becoming more obese and overweight than ever due to all of the electronic distractions in today 's society. So now, it should be more required than ever to make sure kids aren’t overweight and they are fit. Although physical education takes time away from other subjects in the classroom, physical education should be required in schools because our generation is becoming overweight and it helps students do better in class.
For children, drawing involves both a process (making of art) and a product (the completed art expression). These drawings need to be considered within the context of the child’s developmental, social, cultural and emotional experiences. (Malchiodi, 1998). I have chosen to examine three drawings by C, an 8-year-old girl I have been having therapeutic play sessions with. She was referred to me by her father, due to her inability to concentrate at school, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, which cause her to get into trouble at school, and in social situations. C is an only child, living at home with her parents. She is Taiwanese, and her mother tongue is Mandarin.
Creativity can be defined as the willingness to be courageous, adventurous, daring and to try new things. Creative people take risks and produce some of the best ideas. When designing and making, creative work is likely to bring about original knowledge which will incur risk taking. Innovation and risk taking are skills that are close together, everyone that knows it have to deal with creating something new everyday.
Why is writing important? Writing is an important skill to learn and enhance. Writing allows a person to be able to express their thoughts and ideas on to a piece of paper. Writing allowed me, even from a young age, to be able to express myself. Writing allowed me to add my thoughts and feelings on to a piece of paper. Writing is a skill that is necessary for life. Writing gives you the ability to express yourself in ways that talking could not. From a young age, I loved to write. Writing acted as a scapegoat to me. It allowed me to vanish from reality. It gave me the ability to get in touch with my inner thoughts.
“Arts education is critical for helping students develop creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving abilities” (Chernin). The arts can help people succeed. Art is a way that people can express themselves and share their beliefs. Arts in education can help people focus and attend. Fine arts are important because they make a huge impact on kids education, they make an impact on how people pursue their life careers, and it also helps with stress and anxiety.
Art can do lots of things that can create powerful and great changes in ourselves. Artist is someone that is so hard to read if we fail to understand them to interpret the underlying meaning behind their painting because it is their getaway to express their emotions and desires to the community.
It is essential that younger generations receive a quality education. Children all over the United States of America are being deprived of their schooling. Not all schools receive equal funding. Kids who grow up in less wealthy areas are less likely to receive a good education. Children are being set up for failure. They 're funding is based on the wealth of the area they live in. Kids who might have excelled in certain areas with the right tutoring will never get the opportunity to without the proper funding. This is a shame to see talent going to waste. Think of all of the possibilities that these children could have created for the world with the right education. The United States has to invest in the youth. Keep the chain going to better the standard of life. That 's what the future is all about. We must improve on our previous generations to make the world a better place to live in. The United States must rehaul the out of date education system to compete with other top nations to give children an opportunity to education with equal funding so they can learn to the best of their ability.
