Carlie Flanagan Yearbook Assignment In 1958, Newfield High School opened its doors to students. Since then, a lot in the school has changed. This reflects what has changed in American society during this time, and how the culture of the area has changed. Almost sixty years later the school still has yearbooks from every year. By examining these yearbooks I could see what has changed in the culture surrounding the school. Before examining the yearbooks, I composed a series of questions that could help me learn about how culture has changed. I wanted to study style; I asked how makeup, hair, clothing and outfits changed. I also asked how sports uniforms changed, how sports activities themselves …show more content…
Material culture includes physical objects, which have symbolic meanings behind them. For example, technology changed greatly. In the 1980s, the vending machines were taller, wider and designed to look like fake wood. Nowadays the vending machines are shiny, and many of them are digital. Also since the 2000s, photographs have shown more students at computers, in computer labs, because this technology has grown more accessible. Recently classroom settings had their chalkboards changed to Smart Boards. In the yearbook itself, a majority of the photos used to be in plain black and white. This was not only in the 60s, but lasted many years. From the 80s to the early 2000s yearbooks had mostly black and white photos, but the senior photos, deemed important, were in color. Then in the most recent years the yearbooks were in full color. This is not only because of technology, because color film was around for a long time, but affordability. When color film was cheap enough to be used in yearbooks, then it was used. The brands that students wore also reflected what was popular at the time. In the 90s Converse sneakers were popular among the students with the rise of the punk movement making them trendy. In the 2000s it was clothing brands like Abercrombie & Fitch and American Eagle, which bore the brand names across the clothing. Then in recent years popular brands became Thrasher and Van …show more content…
These include the norms, values and beliefs of the time. For example in the 60s, Newfield offered a course called “beauty culture,” which we now call cosmetology. This shows a change in women 's careers. While beauty culture sounds like a hobby, cosmetology sounds like a serious profession. Newfield also valued modesty, although that has changed. In the 60s the uniforms of cheerleaders were long-sleeved turtlenecks and skirts below the knee. But progressively over the years the uniforms got smaller, to tee shirts and above knee skirts, and now to sleeveless tops with short skirts. The school has also increased security since its founding. Until recent years there were candids of students roaming free in hallways, and seniors hanging out in and even painting the courtyard. Now, the courtyard is heavily locked and no one can actually go outside. Students also aren 't free to roam the halls or be anywhere besides their
The Historic Summit Schoolhouse is a long-term, educational living history program that attempts to present an accurate interpretation of a day in a nineteenth-century, one-room schoolhouse. The program is centered on an individual historical structure known as the Summit District Thirty-Eight schoolhouse. The Summit schoolhouse is an authentic, one-room building that was erected in the spring of 1892 in Summit, Kentucky. The school was in operation until shortly after World War Two, when it was permanently shut down due to declining student numbers. The Summit schoolhouse was tragically neglected and forgotten for twenty-five years until several, regional conservation groups became interested in preserving the one-hundred year old structure.

Some parents are reacting to an outdated perception that there will be a lack of discipline when students have too much free time, and this lack of discipline will keep them from getting the best possible education. We all know there are only a few kids who are irresponsible in their behavior at Monarch, and it is these students who should not be allowed off campus. An open campus should be an earned privilege based on the student’s maturity and good
Twas the morning of the fourth of August at Juan Diego Catholic High School as the day was going just normal for most of the students who attended there. Some were having a wonderful day and some were having an awful day such as Jake the 10th grader spilling coffee on himself and almost burning the skin off of his body. To continue on, our story here today focuses on the society we have at Juan Diego and what we know and what we don’t, and how we go into perspective on how others are being treated and how they truly feel. To get back to our story here is what is happening at this certain moment, it is 8:00 and school has just started, our main character today is Justin Morrison who is in the 9th grade, Justin's parents are divorced and his sister is ran away from home five years ago and him and his family have never heard from her since then.
I was told early into the semester by my professor Rogerio Zapata that we needed to write a six page essay on a regular meeting or a school board meeting. In fact in our first exam some of the questions were about the paper we needed to write. In addition Professor Zapata remained us every class to attend a meeting. As a high school student the first thing I did was to going ask my principle if she knew when the next school board meeting was going to be held. She give me great information and told me if I needed more about the meeting to go to the school website.

The culture during the 1860s in the United States of America has changed many times and is still changing today. Look back to the times during the Civil War. Clothing was being morphed throughout the decade into different styles and fashions depending on the location of where the people lived such as towns or rural areas. Architecture in the 1860s also had varieties of styles such as the Victorian style.
Having access to a cafeteria would limit the amount of students that leave campus for lunch. Students are known to leave
In the 1920s, society’s morals loosened and consequently so did the average women’s dress code. People became free-spirited and celebratory and so fashion started to evolve into a less formal wear. Style changed to a new look centered around a 5“Women in the Labor Force,” infoplease.com, October 1, 2015. Accessed February 18, 2016, http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0105673.html.
Because of this, students feel like they should be able to have the freedom to leave. But what they really have is the capability to educate themselves. If students disobey this statement and ditch class for lunch, then they will
…challenging because students are usually noisy and disturb other students and classes.” (Alzakari, Ziad Y. “High School Seniors and Effective Use of Study Hall Time” Ascd.org. The hippie culture, which started at the late 1960’s, continued into the early 1970’s, which was all about discos, and colorful & innovative and faded towards the middle end of the decade, which involved opposition to the Vietnam War, opposition to nuclear weapons, the advocacy of world peace, and hostility to the authority of government and big business. The environmentalist movement began to increase dramatically in this period. But, enough with that let’s get more deeper into the fashion, hairstyles, makeup, music and entertainment. The women’s hairstyles varied from soft, long and feminine too short and edgy.
70 years ago, life was completely different. Many of the items we can’t live without today, such as the Internet, cellphones and music players were only fiction back then. The separation of generations that occurred after the end of World War 2 resulted in young people becoming more and more independent, thus developing their own different ways of living and playing a larger role in the economy and trends. Because of that, many styles and products were brought out specifically for teenagers, providing daily changes and improvements to their lives. Since the 50s-60s and 80s-90s, the teenagers' entertainment and appearance have changed dramatically with the introduction of new technology and modern worldviews.
Students can express their style and identity through their clothes. Students would like the freedom to keep up with latest styles and fashion and having dress codes takes that away. Lee Rowland, “School dress codes are saying that the self-identity that you want to express through your clothes doesn 't belong here. ”(Rowland 1).
Many high schools have implemented dress codes that set rules for what students can and cannot wear while on school premises, and yet many people disagree with these policies. Though arguments can be made for either side, a dress code can have a very positive outcome for all parties involved. A fixed dress code promotes professionalism in a learning environment, and contrary to popular belief, it does not limit a student’s freedom of expression. Last but not least it encourages equality and acceptance among their peers. A dress code can be reasonable if used in proper situations that require certain attires.
