A fundamental skill for all business and organization is to use language effectively in sales and marketing materials. Hence, the task of creating the text for these materials is known as copywriting and it defines as a process of writing advertising promotional materials. What makes an advertisement successful? There are many different methods that brands use in order to promote their products, with some undoubtedly drawing more attention than others. One of the most memorable strategies that a company can use is creating a character that people will automatically associate with a certain business. International and extremely lucrative companies such as McDonalds have found success in this strategy, with the image of Ronald McDonald being able to bring the restaurant to mind. Similarly, Dos Equis has created a character that is synonymous with the product itself.
Print advertisements are very important today because they show people the importance of a product, or even the knowledge of doing something right or wrong. A website called, Smallbusiness.chron.com states, “Small companies using print in advertising can expect their advertisements to last longer.” A long lasting message is what companies strive for since they want to get their point across and are typically very informative. Of course, getting the point across is the goal in all marketing company departments, but sometimes commercials on television are not enough. Print advertisements leave more of a lasting impression on someone’s mind which leads them to wonder.
The last way the writer persuades the audience to make the commercial effective is through logical reasoning and well-thought-out situations. The writer did not exaggerate advertising. However, the writer used a logical situation that would keep the audience’s attention and allow them to see the product multiple times within the commercial. For example, if the writer of the commercial stood in a room and said buy our Chevy truck there would not be many people interested in the product. However, the writer used a logical situation, a dog and a young boy, to interest the audience and keep them guessing what the commercial is about.
What makes a piece of writing effective? A piece of writing includes many things that make it effective, such as the style that appeals to the reader and rhetorical devices used in the writing that make it much more interesting. In this piece of writing titled “ How to tame a wild tongue “ includes many of these things. Even starting with the title it makes me curious as to what the piece will be about. There are two devices Anzaldua uses effectively in her essay which are anecdotes and parallel structure.
After reading the first chapter, writing with Style, from “Thinking Well”, by John R. Trimble, he made it seem as if he was writing about my writing when he explained a novice writer. Trimble explains how a novice writer would write by giving examples of how their style of writing looks like. For example, Trimble explains how new writers unconsciously write and how they are not aware of their egocentrism. He states what a novice would have to achieve objectivity, empathy, courtesy and social sensitivity in order for him to have a readable style. Trimble then discusses what makes a veteran writer and how their thinking process reflects their writing situation.
The language used by Andrew Jackson in “On Indian Removal” and Michael Rutledge in “Samuel's Memory” is different because of many different writing factors. The difference in purpose, audience and tone create the changes in these author's works. The purpose for a piece of writing determines the language used, which also influences the audience and tone. Knowing the audience can help make the purpose more clear and better represented. While the tone can give clues to who the audience is and what the purpose is.
