Diversity is universal. It is all pervasive. The prospect of eliminating diversity from a particular environment is extremely utopian and impossible especially after the world has become a much smaller place and socio-economic linkages exist between different countries and culture. For a company to even think of a homogenous work environment would be like digging one’s own grave, at least financially if not ethically and morally. Diversity can occur across multiple dimensions – political, religious, caste, gender, language and nationality amongst others. Such diversity might not have a very explicit effect on the work environment and efficiency but each dimension has a certain impact of work attitude and performance. This is not necessarily a bad thing. After all, diverse opinions do no harm. Now, you may ask, why have diversity? It is very difficult to manage and if not handled well, can be potentially disastrous. Thus, given below are the economic benefits of having workplace diversity. 1. With that being said, Starbucks could improve by incorporating diversity into main work of the organization. One way Starbucks proves their commitment to diversity is authentic by holding a diverse board of directors. Of the seven board members, three are women and one of these women is of an African descent.
