Diversity is universal. It is all pervasive. The prospect of eliminating diversity from a particular environment is extremely utopian and impossible especially after the world has become a much smaller place and socio-economic linkages exist between different countries and culture. For a company to even think of a homogenous work environment would be like digging one’s own grave, at least financially if not ethically and morally. Diversity can occur across multiple dimensions – political, religious, caste, gender, language and nationality amongst others. Such diversity might not have a very explicit effect on the work environment and efficiency but each dimension has a certain impact of work attitude and performance. This is not necessarily a bad thing. After all, diverse opinions do no harm. Now, you may ask, why have diversity? It is very difficult to manage and if not handled well, can be potentially disastrous. Thus, given below are the economic benefits of having workplace diversity. 1. Drives economic growth: Women form almost half the population of India. Almost 20% of the population is non-Hindu. Also, there are hundreds of castes existing in India. Alienating these demographics spells doom for the business and the economy at large. It is much better to have an opinion of the minority demographic and include them in the business instead of ignoring them. 2.
