Tan is conscious of the fact that she isn’t the best at speaking English, but she makes it clear that there are different categories of English. In the beginning of the story Tan says “I cannot give you much more than personal opinions on the English language and its variations in this country or others.” (649) By saying this she is telling the readers that she isn’t very experienced in the English language.
