Discussion The findings revealed a misconception in terms of student’ paraphrasing comprehension. This refers to students’ respond in defining paraphrasing which they answer it in its basic definition. The study finds that the participants, mostly, consider paraphrasing as the act of replacing synonym. Several researchers have the similar justification with the finding of this study that students’ orientation regarding paraphrasing is limited to the process of knowledge telling rather than knowledge transformation (Barry, 2010; Howard, et.al, 2010; Hirvela & Du, 2013). Interestingly, while these students’ perception regarding the concept of paraphrasing is not exactly incorrect, nonetheless, this can be considered as an arguable issue. Most of students, if they are asked to paraphrase they will reflect this as a matter of simply rewording one or two words in their work. Howard, et.al (2010) implicitly states that the partial comprehension of paraphrasing may lead one to patchwrite, “a reproduction, with minor changes to the word and sentence, of the source language. Some of the participants’ work in the current research is …show more content…
The previous output of students paraphrasing show one sample of paraphrasing is different compare to the accurate paraphrasing. Surprisingly, there are two participants which are not certain about what strategy of paraphrasing tshey used. However, one of them is able to deliver an accurate paraphrasing. Issue of changing the word form, due to the inappropriate strategy, is the only problem of inaccurate paraphrasing discovered in this study. The study indicates a correlation of students’ knowledge and how it affects their writing. Some of the students did not perform an adequate paraphrasing because of the lack of paraphrasing strategy they
The Synopsis that I gathered from Haas and Flowers’ “Rhetorical Reading Strategies and the Construction of Meaning” was none the less another interesting read. Experienced readers might come to understand that both reading and writing can be “context-rich, situational, and have constructive acts”. Though a large number of students may find reading and writing more or less to be an exchange of valued or non-valued information. Continuing on, multiple studies that have been conducted have also found that on average 77 percent of experienced readers tend to use content strategies to expand their knowledge of the reading. These strategies usually include vigorous annotations of the reading/writing that have been shown to improve the readers/writers’ comprehension of the material.
Alex is doing a research essay on Frogs. Unfortunately, his paper was not only focus in the animal but he actually reroutes his essay talking about other amphibians make it confusing for the teacher and his class because he got out of context and missed the point from what he was originally asked to do. This is a fictional example of how not focusing in our writing can lead to a poor outcome. Following the writing process can be the best guide to help us succeed when we write our papers.
A Rhetorical Analysis “America’s Most Overrated Product: The Bachelor’s Degree” A bachelor’s degree just to drive a taxi cab? It might be the future of many college graduates according to Marty Nemko. In a June, 2008 edition of the Chronical of Higher Education in an article titled “America’s Most Overrated Product: The Bachelor’s Degree” Nemko argues that a four year college degree may not be worth the cost, and not the right choice for most high school graduates. For past generations, it has been expected that to be successful one must attend a four year university.
Based on the readings and videos that you read/watched during week one, how would you describe “rhetoric”? What is “the rhetorical situation” and how do you see an awareness of this concept affecting your writing and behaviors? The word “rhetoric” is considered as the art of using language effectively and persuasively in any form of communication. So, it is omnipresent in our life.
Does it ever occur to you why people copy each other? With the play 12 Angry Men by Reginald Rose is about 12 jurors who are on a murder trial for a premeditated homicide which was conducted by an inner-city teenager. These men are isolated in a limited conference room to deliberate whether or not the boy is guilty. During the heated conversation, personal tensions arise which makes the case harder than it should be. When personal arguments aroused a particular one stood out, copying everyone’s opinions makes you not behave according to what is morally right, although in addition to being fair.
In any school you have attended, plagiarism is a situation that a writer should not put themselves in under any circumstances. When reading the essay “Something Borrowed,” Malcolm Gladwell gave insight into the flaws of plagiarism that writers may not have thought about before. The first being that plagiarism is never acceptable (927). The second issue with plagiarism is recognizing the differences that can or cannot “inhibit creativity” (931). Being inspired by another person's work can help and guide you to build your own ideas, but simply taking their work and claiming it as yours is not permitted.
Or, as the writer T.S. Elliot once said: “Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different.” Universities aren’t teaching job skills This debate surrounding plagiarism is indicative of a wider discussion going on about the role universities play in training the next generation of
Paraphrasing is an advantage because it helps readers understand the story better by using different words. Not to mention that the use of paraphrasing is to help readers understand better. Malinowski uses quite a bit of paraphrasing in her essay. By doing this she is helping readers understand the piece “30 Little Turtles”. Malinowski uses paraphrasing when she mentions that a working Indian women fells free now that she is making money to pay for her education.
In the article by Hass and Flower they discuss how important rhetorical reading is in the way we construct meaning. I agree with them I believe it is important to have a better understanding of what you are reading. While I am someone who is guilty of just getting through a reading to paraphrase I do sometimes struggle with reading between the lines. Something Hass and Flower mentioned that I feel is important in this article is how reading is connected with the way we write. Hass and Flower go on to say that experienced readers understand both reading and writing are context-rich, situational, constructive acts and many students see reading and writing as information exchange.(Pg426)Therefore
As I engage this unit’s Read and Attend assignments, I find that my understanding of plagiarism is not as fully developed as I had previously thought. Our Unit 3 Attend assignment shares that “in a general sense plagiarism may be caused by carelessness” and these circumstances frequently precipitate the lack of care required while writing (Bethel University, 2014, p. 11). The academic integrity tutorial provided additional information which I found valuable as well. Common themes within each unit assignment provide strands of continuity, while assisting with a more comprehensive understanding. It is my opinion, the type of plagiarism that is hardest for me to avoid is “plagiaphrasing”, also known as “lazy paraphrasing” (Bethel University, 2014, p. 12).
1. Copy a short passage that you found to be interesting and explain why you found it interesting/why it is an example of good writing. “If evenings at the fair were seductive, the nights were ravishing. The lamps that laced every building and walkway produced the most elaborate demonstration of illumination ever attempted and the first large-scale test of alternating current.

In my spring semester of English 1301, I was required to view reading and writing in a drastically new way. This steep learning curve highlighted my weaknesses as a writer and textual analyst. I have learned a great deal in my time as an English student, however I have much to learn about professional and colligate writing. The work I conducted on brief assignment two showed me that I had to work on understanding the difference between summary and paraphrase.
This articles made mention of how angry victim may confront the participant who stole their ideas. They also made mention of the fact that most ideas were used with or without their knowledge intentionally and unintentionally in some situations but they never pointed out that plagiarism as students destroys their professional refutation if they want to become big business men and women in the future. Legal repercussions and suspension form schools are also some effects and consequences students who plagiarise go through. Despite these deficiencies, the authors were still able to lay down the necessary argument about plagiarism not to only students but to the public as well. Shonda and stephens provided strong credible points to show the level of anger caused to the owner and the intent to harm their participants as well as conform them since their took their substances with or without their
Therefore, the reason that I had to change my instructional plan was because, my students needed for me to model the lesson concept more than I had planned. Furthermore, the students were able to effectively complete their individual writing assignment after I added additional time to model for them each step of the writing
