One of the organizations I am proud to donate to is the United Service Organizations, or USO. Since 1941, the USO has supported troops at home and abroad. With the intent to lift the spirits of troops and their family members, the organization endeavors to provide a “home away from home” feeling for all the families dealing with the rigors of serving overseas. The organization became famous for its Camp Shows over the years--with some occurring in active war zones. To make this all possible, the USO relies heavily on private donations.

Of my many volunteer and paid extra-curricular activities, the most important to me is the National Art Honor Society, which extends artistic activities to my community. We organize two school events: the Festival of Trees and the Talent Competition. The Festival of Trees is an event when every school club can choose to donate and decorate a tree that we set up. All of the money raised goes to an organization of our choice. For the last 4 years, we have donated to Street Grace, which benefits the fight against human trafficking, especially in the Metro Atlanta area.
I learned about Occidental from my family, my cousin Brian Smith is the offensive coordinator for Oxy's football team and his wife Liane Smith works for Oxy as well. When I visited Oxy I was able to experience the school for what it really is, an amazing community. Everyone I talked to, students and staff, were very friendly and made me feel right at home. I was able to attend the homecoming barbecue and football game and it really left me with a great feeling about the school. My main interest in Occidental is that it is a liberal arts school.
I provide for my familial community by being a major financial contributor in my family. Also, my country, Dominican Republic is severely poor. Recently I got the chance to go to Dominican Republic and my family and myself round up many toys, snacks, and books to give to children. We cook a large meal and go to one of the poorest parts of the country: Hospedaje Yaque, Santiago de los Caballeros. In this annual event we give poor children and families a meal, many toys, books, and things that they need for survival.
I love volunteering because even though you don't get money for helping someone, you get the joy and happiness of knowing you did something good for someone else. Being a member of Key Club and Junior Optimist I have the opportunity to volunteer frequently in the community and to the school. I have volunteered to work in various booths at the Glandorf Park Fest. I helped work at the YMCA Trunk or Treat to pass out candy to the little kids on Halloween. A group of my friends went over to Kalida to help with the Triathlon.
Within all these clubs we volunteer in the community throughout the years, like the Chapman Township Haunted House we do for the community every year. In the summer I also participate in the Saint Joe’s Festival, which is held by the church I’m a member of. I usually help run the game stations.
In my community, I donate to St Jude’s Hospital for cancer research. Almost half of my family has had some kind of cancer. Donating to St. Jude’s Hospital helps me give back to people who have already lost their lives, are undergoing treatment, or anyone who might have cancer in the future. In my 7th grade year, another student and I raised money to help find a cure for Type One Diabetes. The money that we raised went to an organization called “Beyond Type One” so that they can use it to perform scientific experiments to find a cure.
My Values of becoming a part of the NJHS I am Lauren Forsyth and a student of Catonsville Middle School. I feel that I should be a part of National Junior Honor Society because of my dedication towards volunteering, leadership and citizenship. The following essay will demonstrate how I have dedicated my time towards volunteering, leadership and citizenship. As of 2016, I have dedicated myself to 47 hours of service learning and giving back to my community is a very important part of my life. In 6th grade I created a fundraiser to help breast cancer awareness to help find a cure for breast cancer and I had earned 5 service learning hours with two hundred dollars raised in total at my school.
I am an active member in our community. I volunteer every month, at least once a month. One of the organizations that I volunteer at is Spoonful of Hope. This organization dedicated to feeding those who were, and still are feeling the effects of hurricane Sandy. They also give food to those who are hungry and in need of a decent meal in our community.
Because this great community supported me so much, I've been able to contribute back and help others enjoy cross country skiing and all the amazing qualities that come with it. I've volunteered at local races for the past 4 years, always encouraging everyone to race, regardless of age, speed or technique. I completely understand how a bunch of young racers in spandex suits can be intimidating, I was in that position once too. Skiing is a life long sport, and racing does not have to be a part of
Career Goal I have a few career goals such as becoming an ER registered nurse and a nurse practitioner but fist I want to be an ER registered nurse. For a long time now I could just envision myself in the blue scrub running out to the ambulance as the EMT rushed the patient into the hospital. And successfully collaborating with a team of people to save someone's life.
Having just watched the brilliant film about a gifted boy called Vitus made me rethink of the notion of giftedness. Whereas Vitus exhibits typical pattern of behavior of a gifted child, he is still unique in his ability to live “like a gifted”. In the beginning of the film he is regarded as aloof and extraordinary, discussing the concept of a “global warming”, thus, making his kindergarten teacher feel befuddled and even frightened. Though this precocity is seen a typical trait of a gifted child, according to Robinson (2008), who puts the intellectual superiority over other age peers in first place along with other eminent features (p. 34). I’ve never been very interested in fashion and I’m not a fan of constantly updating my wardrobe. Seeing the major effects that the fashion industry has makes me feel better about falling behind in the fashion world. I watched China Blue, a documentary about the poor working conditions in Chinese factories that produced denim products, for my International Management course as an undergraduate student. That documentary impacted me, and I often think of the people that were highlighted in that film. I feel as if The True Cost will be a documentary that I think of from time to time as well.
