One of the most widely known sports debates across the globe, in the past year, or so, has been whether, or not, student athletes deserve to acquire currency from their universities and/or sponsors. Many believe that collegiate athletes should be rewarded with pay. I, on the other hand, disagree with that opinion, entitling myself to my own belief that student athletes do not deserve any payment. I strongly believe that student athletes shall not be paid for the reason that if colleges were handing this money out to them, the athletes would not worry about their performance as students in the classroom. In addition, most student athletes are already receiving payments in various different ways. Unfair pay would be an issue, as well.
First and foremost, one of the essential lessons that all students are

By definition, a scholarship is a sum of money or other aid granted to a student, because of merit, need, athletics, etc., to pursue his or her studies. If you ask me, it seems to me that there is no reason for student athletes to be paid, for the reason that they are already provided with the opportunity to receive a scholarship, which is very similar. Therefore, if a university is already spending large amounts of money from their own budget to allow many athletes to play sports for their teams, then why should they spend even more of their budget to reward them with pay again? On a second note, students athletes may not be paid with wages, but along with their scholarships, national exposure to television or scouts is provided, too. If you think about it, the million dollar rookie contracts that these athletes sign once they go pro, may not be possible if it were not for the exposure that these student athletes are rewarded with. People may not see it or understand it, but these athletes are already paid with a paycheck that is worth just as much as
The cartoon’s audience are the people that runs the school. Boris Drucker make an assumption about the people who will look at this cartoon by making the sports team feel good about themselves and it also shows that the school is not as greats as the sports teams. Which shows that the school needs to also focus on the academics of the students and not just all sports. The characters in this cartoon are a football player, a coach and a reporter.
There is a controversy of whether college athletes should get paid or not? Some say that many people make money off of them by selling jerseys, doing ads, and etc. So they should at least make some money for other people using them. On the other hand, people say that they already have a full ride scholarship why do they need to get paid or what if smaller schools can’t pay them? College athletes should get paid because people make money off them, some sport careers don 't last long, and getting payed large amount of money teaches financial responsibility.
The NCAA Shouldn’t Compensate College Athletes Ever since the creation of collegiate sports, the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) has been under discussion weather to pay college athletes in addition to their scholarships. The topic heated up in 1973 when the NCAA came out with a rule that set a limit to the amount of scholarships an athletic program can offer to students. This started speculations that the NCAA was being unfair to students deserving of the scholarships. With college sports growing to colossal levels since then and generating billions of dollars along the way, many are arguing that it is time for the NCAA to share their revenue with the athletes who help get them that money. Paying collegiate athletes
“The NCAA recently voted to allow schools to begin compensating its student-athletes for their entire cost of attendance” (Entman). This is a big push for college athletes. ; College athletes should be paid; therefore, they deserve to receive the amount of money they work for. College athletes work hard while in class, and then
College athletes deserve to be paid because they are the only ones not being paid in the college sports industry. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) generates eleven billion dollars annually, some of which could, and should go to college athletes. “USA Today reported last year just how much money the top 10 coaches in college football made. Nick Saban from Alabama topped the list earning roughly $5.5 million in 2013 alone” (Seibold). The coaches are making millions of dollars and the players aren’t.
Should pros be allowed to draft college athletes before they graduate. I believe that the pros shouldn’t be allowed. My reasoning is that players need time to develop & think about what’s best for them. Another reason is that players should graduate first so that if the sport they play doesn’t work out then they have a college degree for a back up career in something else. There are plenty of good reasons but something that players should think more about is the longer you stay in college the more developed & ready for the pro sport you dream of going into.
Many believe that college athletes are similar to professional athletes and that they deserve to be paid for what they do. However, many college athletes are able to receive many other benefits, therefore additional compensation is not necessary. College athletes go to school to play their sport, but also go to get an education. Their main role is to prepare themselves for later in life, and being paid would take away if they were being paid. Student athletes are not professional athletes or entertainers, and should not be paid for playing on a college team.
Paying these athletes will make them stay in school longer, educate them and give them a chance to enjoy college before the real-world hits. Even with this people may say why pay these students who carry a 1.0 GPA? That is a very valid point, so if student athletes do get paid in the future there should be some type of rule or something that the players can only get paid if they are meeting a certain GPA. This will keep the players hungry and eager to keep working hard knowing that there is a reward at the end of the
The way the current system is set up, scholarship, allows students access to a free education, tutoring, and many other educational benefits. According to an article in the junior scholastic, Should College Athletes be Paid?, more than 480,000 compete as NCAA athletes, and less than two percent will move on to compete at the professional level. When the other 98% of these college students graduate, they will go into the workforce, needing an education. Providing athletes with bonus cash payments will divert even more funding from academic departments and challenge the primary purpose of attending college, an education. Leaving the system the way it is would allow for the student to continue to focus on an education, and being able to graduate with a Bachelor’s
II. Athletes are already paid through scholarships and should be going to college primarily for an education. A. In a USA Today College article, points out that athletes are already paid through scholarships, experience and education (Marshall, Blake).
I agree with the side that they are paid a good amount of money. In conclusion I believe that pro athletes are paid a really good
For many years, there have been disputes on whether college athletes should be paid or not. “There are thousands of big-time college football players, many who are poor. They put up with playing for free because it’s impossible to pursue a career in the NFL, unless they play at least 3 years in college. Less than 1% actually end up signing pro contracts, and even fewer even make serious money.” (B) “There are student-athletes who have to leave school early because they do not have enough money to continue or to pay their bills and leaving school for a career in pro sports is an easy way of making money.
Do you think college athletes should be paid? This controversy is debated in Opposing Viewpoints: Sports and Athletes. Al Woods titles his argument College Athletes Should Be Paid because the schools are making money off the players, some athletes are being paid under the table, and athletes are giving up on education. However, Krikor Meshefejian titles his argument College Students Should Not Be Paid because students receive scholarships, the payment system is “problematic”, and the experience is payment enough(98-99.) Meshefejian has the better argument that students should not be paid.
The professional athletes again, should make much more because the government does not have enough to pay our soldiers, they have just as much training, and they get paid from different sources to get paid what they
Although, there are reasons that they should get paid less, I still believe they shouldn’t because athletes don’t just play the sport. Athletes are involved in charities and volunteering where they hang out with kids who don’t have the opportunity to see them play. Fans or kids look up to these athletes as role and want to grow up to be just like them. When so many kids look up these athletes it means they are doing something great and deserve the money they get paid. These athletes play on the biggest stages every week and are in the public eye every second of the day.
