Sleep deprivation is a term used to describe a state caused by lack of sleep. Sleep is where humans undergo a state of unconsciousness. It has become a very big part in our lives. Sleep is essential to surviving this world. It is important as water and food and without it we cannot function properly. Study shows that when a person lacks sleep, concentration, memory, coordination and mood suffer. Studies reveal how chemical and brain cells work together to govern sleep and the different changes that takes place in the brain when a person is sleep deprived. We would all agree the Medical Technology is one of the hardest courses offered in Silliman University. Most of the first year students in Medical Technology suffer a sleep deprivation due to numerous tests, a lot of assignments and activities to be passed within a week. There are many bad things that can affect you health. if you lack sleep. When you are sleep deprived you are most likely to suffer depression and you can inherit different kinds of diseases like chronic heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.
Avoiding sleep deprivation is a struggle. None of us college students especially Medical Technology students can avoid not sleeping late and not sleeping less. While college is known for staying up all night, and cramming for exams, this term of sleep deprivation is starting to take a serious toll. Over the years the sleeping patterns of students attending college and universities has changed dramatically. Studies show that as time goes on the average night of sleep students are getting is decreasing drastically (Jensen, 2003). The way students are falling into this lack of sleep are by forming an irregular sleep-wake cycle, which consists of getting little to no sleep during the week, then on weekends catching up on all the missed sleep.
