What is Communication?
Basic communication is “The process of transmitting information from one person to another.” There are two main types of communication, effective communication and complex communication. Effective Communication is “The process of sending a message in such a way that the message is received as close in meaning as possible to the message intended.” (Griffin, Ricky W.1987) Complex communication is “The process by which ideas, information, opinions, attitudes and feelings are conveyed from one person to another.’’ …show more content…

It was more complex than Shannon and Weaver’s but it still took their linear process as its skeleton. The main advantages over their model are: it related the message to the ‘reality’ that it is ‘about’ and enables us to approach the questions of perception and meaning, and it sees the communication process as consisting of two alternating dimensions – the perceptual or receptive, and the communicating and control dimension. This dimension also contains the concept of access to the media and channels of communication. (Fiske, John 2010)

Lasswell’s model (1948) model is specifically one of mass communication. Lasswell argues that to understand the process of mass communication we need to study each stage in his model: Who, says what, in which channel, to whom, with what effect. His model is a verbal version of Shannon and Weaver’s original model. Most mass-communication research has implicitly followed this model. (Fiske, John 2010)

Newcomb’s Model (1953) is not linear. It is one that introduces us to a different shape. It is triangular. We are all passionate about something, however the big question is how prepared are you to let your passion show. It is important to let the audience know you have an interest in the topic you are presenting. Audience love to see passion from their hosts, have expression in your voice and look the audience in the eyes. Passion is hard to fake but if you write material that you feel passionate about, your feelings will follow when you are presenting. If you are able to show the audience that you are unfazed by such events, you will win their hearts. A presenter who is able to rescue a situation like when the electrics fail, rather than stomping off the stage will make friends and influence people. If you are able to make a joke in response to something that has just happened in the room, this will also have the same effect on the audience. It is also good to end the presentation with a joke as it is good to end on a good note and it will be memorable for the audience. To be professional you need to turn up on time, smartly dressed, look alert, confident and have all the material you need for your presentation. It is important to stick to your specialist subject area and you will look and sound confident. If you are talking about a topic you have limited knowledge on, just deliver what you know, don’t start trying to bulk the content with ‘false expertise’ as it will show clearly less is more.
