Throughout all my years of high school, I have been a part of the Fashion Club, which has motivated me to push myself even more to attend college and follow my dreams. Now that senior year is here and college is around the corner, my family and I are thinking about opportunities to gain a great education and complete my career goal. Fashion has always been a big part of my life because it has got me through all the difficult moments I went through. I have always turned back and looked into Fashion while going through those hard moments and until this day fashion continues to motivate me to attend college and major in Fashion Merchandising. For example, a hard moment in my life was going through the process of moving from a small town to a bigger city. I lived in a small town called Mendota and moved to a bigger city called Madera which made a huge impact on my life because I went from learning from a certain teaching method to a different way of learning at my school today. Although, it was hard for me to comprehend different teaching methods I was able to accomplish and get through that difficult moment in my life which has taught me to be able to manage using variety of learning techniques. Having parents that came from Mexico was very difficult in my life because they had to work extremely hard to provide a healthy lifestyle for my 3 siblings and I. I have 2 sisters that got married in their early teenage years and were not able to attend college and one brother that went straight into the military after graduating high school due to money
The Culverhouse College of Commerce houses some of the brightest students here on our campus that aspire to one day be professionals in the real world. I consider it to be a privilege to be one of the 8,500 students, and it would be an honor to represent the college. I would love to pursue other students to experience Culverhouse through my role as an ambassador. The ambassador program will enable me to be more involved in my college, as well as share my wonderful experience with others. These two reasons are what ultimately motivated me to apply for this program.
My parents moved from Colombia to the United States before I was born. I am apart of the first generation in my family that was born here. My parents moved with the single hope of giving me a better life with more opportunities. Having this background has definitely impacted my life in both trivial and meaningful ways. For instance, my father not being able to break through the language barrier has been an integral part of my lifestyle.
Being a child of immigrant parents has taught me so much. For example, being able to work hard for what you want. At school, I always strive to get A’s. My parent’s have taught me to never settle for anything less than a B. They know that in order for me to go to college and be successful, I not only have to get good grades but work hard to get there.
Both of my parents did not live in poverty, but my dad did struggle financially since he did not live with his parents. He could only afford very little, but that changed once he came to America. I am incredibly grateful for their sacrifices to irrevocably ensure my sister and I experienced the opportunities they never did in
My parents came from another country and made the American culture and way of life their own like other immigrants before them. Because of this I can deal in a unique way with cultural or racial challenges or tensions. My parents did not let their culture dictate who I am but let it be a part of who I would become. For that I will always be grateful. I hope that in the future the percentage of Hispanics in my community grows, but my experience of being such an extreme minority in a community close to a major, modern city gives me a truly unique perspective.
During my high school career I have made a consistent effort to stay involved in both my school and community. Through clubs such as Key Club, National Art Honor Society, and National Honor Society I’ve been able to help out locally and globally in an abundance of ways. In Key club and NHS I am able to volunteer in traditional ways, but National Arts Honors Society allows me to contribute to my community and school in a creative way that stimulates people 's minds through art. Due to these activities having a significant impact on my life my future career options are based around what I have learned from them.
One challenge I think is very big for Mexican immigrants or any immigrant in general is learning a new language. Having to learn the language can take a very long time to be able to do this can affect their lives in many ways, for example; not knowing English or any other language, but their own can affect many things such as their education, getting a job, or even trying to fix family relationships. Many immigrant parents force their children to learn the new language of the country they migrated to which may give them a life a bit easier. Education is another challenge Mexican immigrants face while living in the US. When they first start out they have very low levels and even low Socioeconomic status (SES).
For years I have dreamt about getting into my favorite college. The rush I would get as my school’s football team ran out of the tunnel. All the new people I would meet that would become my friends for life. It is now November of my senior year and I have decided to go to Colorado State University.
This prepares myself for my future because I am going to college to secure a degree in education for elementary students, once I graduate high school. These are examples of how I contribute to various teams and a small
Personal Statement I come from a large family with relatives from a little ranch in Chihuahua, Mexico. Many of which have never made it past grade school. Mainly due to their mother, my grandma, she had fallen very ill. Due to her condition and lack of money my aunts and uncles dropped out of school to work and help pay for her medication and medical expenses. The older siblings had to take care of the younger siblings.
Coming from a low income family, living in a small town in India, I learned early on about struggling and surviving those struggles. I watched my parents working day and night to provide for electricity, pay for our monthly school fees so my sister and I can have a better education, and for the future they wished upon for their children. To further enhance this vision, my father decided for the family and I to immigrate to the US. Everything was different in the sense that I changed schools, learned a new language, had to make new friends, and learned the different culture. I had to adapt to a whole new world, which was a little difficult at 6 years old
Growing up I remember from a very early age being completely captivated by Fashion. My love for Fashion has continued to follow me from the early experiences of watching the red carpets of award shows and being completely infatuated with the ladies long gowns and the vibrant colors of the dresses. To following me through elementary school and loving Art and being able to put colors together to the people in my life always taking notice from an early age, this has continued to follow me all through my academic journey and even to where I am today.
All of my family members, including I was born in Haiti. I strongly believe that my heritage has a lot to do with how successful I have been throughout my life because my parents have been through a lot in their lives and so have my past relatives who were born In Haiti, therefore they have had a great influence on me to become successful. Although my father worked hard for what he has today, he still feels as if he did not work hard enough because if he did, he would have been in a better position than he is today. My mom went to college in Haiti for all 2 years and graduated, but never attended the extra 2 years that she wanted to attend because of obstacles that got in the way. Both of my parents have talked to me and told me that “if you’re willing to work hard, it does have its rewards”.
At this time in our very lives we are planning for the future and making a ladder for ourselves of goals to reach. As you climb higher on the ladder you find yourselves aspiring to take actions that may be more difficult than we imagined. This is just the beginning and we do not give up. As the years come faster I made a list of the things that I am planning on persuing. My major career goal is to go into buisness, and within the buisness industry I want to become a Human Resources Manager.
When I graduate high school, I plan on having future goals that I plan on achieving. My first goal is to go to college and get a degree. I plan on attending Purdue NorthWest majoring in engineering and minoring in business. This is my number one future goal that I need to accomplish because to be able to have a nice life, I need to go to college to support my future family. My next future goal would be get a starting job to be able to support my future family.
