The curriculum at WGU was very challenging, nonetheless it prepared me to become a safe and effective nurse. The BSN curriculum provided avenues to keep me up to date with safe practices and learn how to master therapeutic communication. However, sensitivity to what we are simulating is essential, especially when simulations purport to address patient perspectives. While participating in the “Deteriorating Patient” simulation, learning to complete a Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation (SBAR) report while caring for a deteriorating patient was the most challenging task to complete. After receiving report and beginning the initial interaction with the patient, my confidence level was on a steady rise. Everything seemed to flow well and initiating conversation while building a rapport with the patient was also very easy to complete. Once the patient started to deteriorate, I found myself becoming unorganized and my thoughts were racing. Though I was managing the situation very well, I called for a charge nurse because I realized I needed help.
I had to remember that my “patient” was still alive even though my computer system was not. In this situation I learned routine assessments along with the electronic health record are the best way to monitor patient outcomes. Upon arriving to the unit this morning, I quickly realized today was going to be a chaotic day with the current patient census, and all of the new admissions. I was able to assist the night charge nurse with today’s assignments, while she helped with the code, and the day began. I informed my team that today was going to be a long day, and encouraged them to use each other and myself for help. I recommended they taking a few minutes to coordinate their work after receiving report. At 0745, when Jane informs me that the patient in 408 has fallen, I am quick to get into the room and do an assessment again.
Student work in small groups of four for the psychomotor skill component and feedback was provided to students by student nurse educators on the spot while performing the procedure. Finally, a five questions gaming was provided to measure student’s cognitive retention of the material discussed and the skill gain. The students worked in collaboratively in groups of four to complete the post-quiz and were given feedback on their strengths and weaknesses. The students score higher than 90% on the post-quiz and verbalize collaborative academia learning milieu was permeated with rich intellectual opportunities needed to demonstrate clinical skills and competencies successfully and to further advance their wisdom on catheter insertion and removal. During these past weeks at the Archbold ER, I had the opportunity to put into practice many of the content learned in class. This included but was not limited to the proper placement of a Foley catheter using sterile techniques, insertion of an NG tube, and assessment of patients. Even though I attempted to complete some of my initial goals for this internship, I noticed that I couldn’t complete a few of them due to lack of time and lack of experience in the field. Evolution from Novice to a Beginning Professional Nurse Looking back when I started my nursing school, I can proudly say that I have evolved both physically and psychologically. I was not sure if nursing was the right choice for me at first because I had difficulties interacting with people outside my family circle. The first semester was challenging for me because I did not know how to interact with my class mates and felt isolated each time there is a class activity. I joined a study group later that semester and it has been an excitement ever since.
