Reflection Paper
Topic: Constructivism and Co-operative Learning.

Background Information

First of all I would like to give brief information about myself and my school duties. I started working as a teacher in Sep 2013. I was assigned to teach P2 classes and some after school speaking classes with P2, P4 and P6 students. As a very new teacher with prior experience in teaching, I had to work hard and look for help from my colleagues. I was fortunate enough to have such helpful colleagues who always guided me and helped me.

Joining PGDE at HKU was a turning point in my teaching career. I have learned several new theories and teaching strategies such as constructivism, motivation, self-esteem, collaborative learning, classroom management, teacher-student relationship, different types of assessment methods, differentiation, etc. In other words, ‘PGDE Educational Studies Strand– Classroom Learning and Student Development’, has enlightened me or I can also say that it has revolutionized the way I teach.

Jean Piaget’s theory focuses on cognitive development of the child through different stages according to his/her age. The child learns through number of activities, challenges and solving tasks and move on to the next stage of cognitive development. Lev Vygotsky, on the other hand places emphasis on socio-cultural environmental factors and it is called the ‘social constructivism’ theory. The social constructivism theory states that knowledge is constructed through social interaction and surroundings, sharing ideas and experiences, questioning and answering each other, solving problems
