2.6 months of learning is lost per year because students forget what they learned over the summer (Priddy). The traditional school calendar, which gives students three months of relaxation and no education, is having negative effects as the years go on. Year-round school, 45 days of learning followed by 15 days off, would provide students a less stressful year and other benefits as well. There are currently 3,253 year-round schools in the United States such as, Beecher Community and Flint High School. California currently has 130 year-round schools making it the leader in America (“Year-Round School Education Statistics”). The most common year-round plan has 15 days during the fall, three days for Thanksgiving, 15 days for winter break, 15
Students that are in school during the summer find it harder to concentrate on the work that they are doing in school because they are waiting to get out of school into the nice weather. Year round schools make it difficult to learn with many breaks that they are given which can affect them negatively in and out of school. Year round schools should give long breaks instead of many little breaks because it is shown that there is no difference in learning between year round schools and traditional schools.
Despite the fact that about 26 percent of U.S schools have changed to year-round schedules, is having year-round school really the best choice? Sure, 15 day vacations every 45 days may seem interesting, but what about good old two month two week(ish) summer break? I think there shouldn’t be year round school. Whether or not there should be year-round school is an important question. There shouldn’t be year-round school because it would be hard to find babysitters for younger children for two weeks every six weeks for teachers with young students, and teens would find it hard to get summer jobs. Sure, it offers students frequent breaks, but there still shouldn’t be year round school because of certain predicaments for students and teachers alike.
“Part of education is to help students be prepared for jobs, all year schooling allows students to be more prepared for professional work day hours. In the real world, employees do not get 3 months off.“
I believe that year round schooling will greatly benefit students, teachers, and families. " Since most of us grew up with the traditional calendar, changing to year-round [suggests] that we did it wrong.... It is human nature to resist change, (but) I believe the traditional nine months on, three months off calendar is educational malpractice," said Nautilus Elementary school Principal, Hazel Colebank (qtd. In Chaika).
Traditional school schedules have kids in school from late summer until late spring, the year-round schedule has kids in school all year but the difference is there are longer breaks in the year-round schedule. It is time to switch from the traditional schedule to the year-round schedule because students learn better and don’t lose information over a long summer break, is more convenient for everyone and reduces the stress of school and makes it more enjoyable.
Year Round School Many schools have switched to year round schooling. In fact, there are 3,181 schools in the Michigan. With that 10% of those schools are public schools. Also, many schools with year round school have had high test scores and better rates. In year round school kids are showing more success and more understanding.
Many teachers who are employed by year round schools find that the knowledge retention of their students has been significantly improved with this system. At a standard school a summer break is anywhere from 10-14 weeks off of school, that gives students plenty of time to erase the majority of the past school year from their brains. With year round schooling summer is shortened to approximately 4 weeks which is hardly any longer than the other breaks that the students are getting year round. Having these breaks throughout the year keeps students from becoming restless during a lengthy summer or in their 13th straight week of school. To the benefit of the student this year round schedule allows teachers time during the school year to go to trainings to enhance their class rooms, prepare their teaching plans, and refresh their knowledge on upcoming subjects without the hassle of missing class to attend to these things.
Traditional school versus Year round school The idea of year round school is starting to be more the topic of discussion. Many people are for the idea of year round education and many are against it. “If our country began on a year around schedule, it would have seemed bizarre to propose the summer- off schedule as a superior way to educate students” says Principle Hazel Colebank. Although some may feel year round school is great for bettering education, changing what’s considered normal could cause more harm than good.
How much does summer vacation mean to you? That's the question many families ask themselves as they make the choice for year round schooling. With year round schooling students take several breaks, similar to a winter break in length, instead of one long break in the summer. Some people feel it is a terrible idea, while others say the academic aspect is superior. Although some people feel strong about year round schooling, year-round schooling is not the best educational option for students.
Do you know what a “year round school” is? Did you know that this is a debate that has been going for years? Most public schools in the US have a 10-month long school period with a 2-month long summer break. An year round school is a 180 day school year with short breaks in between each term. Year round schooling has been going on in most arguments about whether it is going to improve student learning. With 34 countries in the world, US has the least amount of school days in a year. Most people may say that an year-round school can give nothing other than stress to students, but there are some positive effects to it.
The amount of work that students put in every school year should be lasting. If there is not a change in the traditional school year, students will continue to fall behind. This is why year-round schooling would be so beneficial. In year-round schooling, there is no time where students get out for more than 30 days. The students get out for 30 days during the summer which is the longest break.
School Year Round Why would anyone want to go to school a year-round? (Rhetorical Question) School should be a year-round because then students will not forget their learning, be more focused on their education and it will be easier to earn their credits in a shorter period of time. Firstly, A school year-round should be offered each year so students will not forget the learning. Many students that come back from their summer break most likely struggle on what they have learned, for instance, everyone ignores most of the subjects and methods that everyone discovered last year.
Kids need a break. Just because school is year round, doesn't mean that students will get less of a break. The breaks will just be more spread out. The summer break most kids get is about three months long the year round school break averages out to about three and a half months. Would you rather get 3 months off or 3 ½ days off? Because students tend to have better educational and grade scores when school is year round, it makes sense to try to have it year round.
(Raisingsmallsouls) It is beneficial for students to have a good summer vacation because students need a break and time off of school and work. Health can always be dangerous and an issue, if students keep studying without a break it could hurt them physically or mentally. (Wilson). Students being hurt and distracted can cause their grades to drop and that would be bad for them.
