Planning helps teachers chart a course for the achievement of its goals. The process involves envisioning the results that we want to achieve and determining the steps necessary to arrive at our intended destination. Conscientious planning for student instruction and engagement provide meaningful experiences for all students to learn and is a key to connecting the classroom to future success for learners.

Teaching is a complex activity that involves preparation and planning objectives and activities on an hourly, daily and weekly basis. In addition, long-term planning ensures coverage of curriculum across a marking period, semester and year. Today’s typical classroom is far more diverse and complex than ever before. With the ever changing standards, methodologies and strategies, teachers breathe life into them and navigate a lot of distinct personalities and various backgrounds, interacting with each other, in any way. (Sagor, R. 2000) It is always important for us to assess and take into account the characteristics of our students before and after creating the instructional plan.

Effective teaching and learning might not happen without the alignment of objectives, learning activities or teaching strategies and assessment. There must always be a connectivity and harmony between what we want, what we do and how we determine the results – a coherent and cohesive set. During the instructional planning time, effective teachers assess or recall students’ preconceptions and misconceptions about the subject matter.
