Everyone knows the phrase, “kick them while they are down.” Well, that’s exactly what homework does. After an exhausting day of school, hard-working students feel very tired when they arrive home. However, homework prevents students from getting their much needed rest and makes them even more weary. Yes, a few studies have shown that homework has led to slight increases in grades. But does a small increase in grades make it worth having students suffer everyday after school? Anyone who supports giving homework likes to see these helpless students in agony. Schools must prohibit homework because it has little to no benefits for students, it has negative health effects, and it prevents students from doing extracurricular activities.
Homework has little to no benefits for students. Homework does not have the benefits for children that many people surmise it does. In the article, “Down with Homework!” Alfie Kohn said, “No study has ever confirmed the widely accepted assumption that homework yields non academic benefits - self discipline, independence, perseverance, or better time-management skills for students of any age…The idea that homework builds character or improves study skills is basically a myth.”(1) If homework has no benefits on social skills for children then why do people mentally abuse innocent students about completing it? Homework--a cruel act of pointless torture--must get outlawed in schools worldwide. Some misguided people say homework makes students practice
For years kids under the age of 14 and 15 there is absolutely no scientific research to prove that homework is benefiting children. Students should not be assigned homework because it causes stress and along with that come other health issues and it is not worth it, and the results promised are not showing up in any studies on homework. Homework has been tested in many different ways by a ton different people and hasn’t shown any results. People around the country are complaining about homework.
Teachers often believe that homework can help with improvement in the classroom as well as with test scores, but studies have proven this belief to be wrong and that it actually does the opposite. Therefore, all of these studies have proven that too much homework causes test scores to drop and that students will have better chance at succeeding in life with a helpful homework
The school use to start at 9am and it gets over at 3pm and then there is a tutoring program which running from 5pm to 8pm. The homework isn’t to bad because sometimes the teachers make us do it during class time and working on the homework with friends as a team work use to be fun. In the article “Down With Homework” the author says “Overwhelms struggling kids and removes joy for high achievers” I disagree on this statement because homework is a part of confidence and helps us to improve in our daily basis studies and keeps us on track. The idea that overall about homework it helps children to learn better and give them a better understanding of what they are learning in the daily
Now when they go back to school they can refresh their memories and not feel so drowsy and feel like a zombie. Homework is mainly a waste of time it can cause stress and brain damage. Sometimes
Students may not even do the homework and its less improvement for them. Homework can help bring your grade up, for example, if you get a 75% on a test a 100 on a homework can help. Statistics have shown that students do not need graded homework to maintain good grades homework is just a practice of what you learned. out of 125 people surveyed by me over 80% said that homework should not be graded for various reasons. Homework can improve a student's grade, but also destroy it.
Finally, twenty two percent of seventeen year olds have no homework, and twenty percent have over two hours. According to these percents, people are overreacting on how much homework is given and the amount of students that receive the homework, but does that homework given negatively affect a student and their family. Homework shouldn’t be banned from schools, but should be reduced to a reasonable amount of time; this way students get the practice they need, but the stress is relieved and no excessive homework that has no meaning is assigned. Banning homework as whole would affect a
Homework Homework has been a part of Americans’ learning for so long, that the idea of not having to complete it may seem incredible, surreal, or even impossible. The survey of 1,000 K-12 teachers found that middle school teachers assign about 3.2 hours of homework each week. On a normal day, students have five core classes, and when you multiply that by 3.2, you have 16 hours of homework for middle school students. Although most educators believe that homework is beneficial, teachers should stop assigning it because kids need time to be kids, they need more rest, and students need a brain break. It is true that most people think that kids have plenty of free time; however, this is not entirely the case, as homework takes time away from other leisure activities or house chores.
“A 2006 meta-analysis conducted of more than 60 studies of homework 's efficacy showed that doing homework did not necessarily increase an elementary school student 's test scores or grades.” (“Homework Bans Don’t. . .”) Another study in 2013, a researcher from Indiana University, Adam Maltese, conducted a study on sophomores to see the relationship between homework and their
Homework is like a boat with a hole in its side if there is a leak in the boat then the boat is useless. The water will rush in and fill the boat with cold, dark water. The same goes for homework, it is useless. All the nights kids spend with hours and hours of homework, all the tears and stress are not helping kids in school. Numerous amounts of today's kids have excessive amounts of homework.
An average student would spend hours on schoolwork a day, which can be very stressful. A high school student will use half of their day around school relation. Almost all elementary to high school students will likely to agree that homework should not be assigned. The majority of students complain about homework yet teachers don’t usually understand why. While homework gives benefits to students, unnecessary homework should not be assigned due to the fact that there are enough school hours, it consumes time, and the development of poor health is encouraged.
A study conducted by a Stanford researcher showed that when students are given too much homework it can become counter productive to what the students learn in school. (Parker “Stanford Research Shows Pitfalls of Homework”). This is important because if homework is becoming counterproductive, it is likely to make students dislike school and homework, which can make kids avoid and forget about doing it which leads to detentions and so on. Another way homework is not benefiting students is that it 's not teaching them anything new but making them repeat what they learned in class, and while kids need to know what they are doing and practice some student don 't need that practice and are forced to repeat what they know so they don 't get terrible grades. One way to change that used by a teacher in San Francisco what she has done is give a worksheet and if a student gets 90% or higher they do not receive homework that night unless the student would like to take the homework for extra practice that night and both ways it is automatically counted as an A. (Wilde Greatschools, “Do our kids have too much homework?”
Although homework can help increase understanding of new topics this kind of practice is not helping students because it can interfere with sleeping, stresses kids and teenagers out and can cause depression, and even make a kid give up on school altogether. Some people believe that homework helps reinforce the skills taught to their students that day; however, if students are getting
Homework is beneficial when you have the right amount of homework. With homework you learn life skills, and finally it helps you master a skill. Furthermore, homework is beneficial to students. First of all, homework is beneficial when you have the right amount of homework. Studies show that with the right amount of homework 2nd graders have done better in math, 3rd and 4th better in english and vocabulary, 5th in social studies, and high schoolers in american history as well as shakespeare.
At Stanford University studies were done that proved that too much homework can negatively impact kids, especially their lives outside of school, with their families, and participating in extracurricular
Above all, homework allows the students to gain responsibility, time-management, perseverance, and self-esteem. “The act of completing homework has benefits in terms of developing good habits in students.” This shows that, students are gaining many skills from homework. This also shows that, homework isn’t a waste of time and students do benefit from homework. “Homework also teaches students how to problem solve, think independently, and build an understanding and interest for the issues in our society.”
